The past will always find you.

Jos Archer was the girl with the perfect life; until the night it all came crashing down around her. Now, nine months later, she still hasn't begun to pick up the pieces. Even transferring to a new college and living under the watchful eye of her older sister, Renee, isn't enough to help her feel normal again.

And then she meets Dusty Sharp. For reasons Jos can't begin to fathom, the newly reformed campus bad boy seems determined to draw her out of her shell. And if she's not careful, his knowing green eyes and wicked smile will make her feel things she's no longer sure she deserves.

But even as Dusty coaxes Jos to open up about the past, he's hiding secrets of his own. Secrets about the night her old life fell apart. When the truth is finally revealed, will it bring them closer together;or tear them apart for good?

One incident changed Jos' life so significantly that her entire personality and outlook on life changed. The once put together, studious, good girl just disappeared into a downward spiral of partying, drinking, and poor grades. Her concerned family forced her to leave the University of New Hampshire and transfer to to the University of Maine and live with her sister Renee and her room mates so she could be more closely supervised.

Renee lives with Hunter, his girlfriend Taylor, Darah, her boyfriend Mase, and Renee's boyfriend Paul that we met in My Favorite Mistake. They take her in immediately even though Jos is resistant to the happy,  fun, but concerned vibe of the house. They all kind of take on  Jos sitting duties.

She meets Dusty by coincidence and he turns out to be a friend of Hunter's. He is flirty, cocky, and bit pushy. And they just keep crossing paths and bantering back and forth.

Jos is trying to get her life back together but is stuck. She is hampered by loss, guilt, and has not shared with anyone. She is closed off, avoiding relationships, and confrontation. But her new friends and Dusty keep trying to find a way to reach her.

Dusty is suffering from his own issues and life changes. He has a checkered past, but is trying to make positive improvements. He has his own reasons for avoiding a relationship with Jos, but he finds it hard to resist her. They are clearly attracted to each other, but take turns pushing the other one away. I liked Dusty and he was an interesting character with his beat boxing skills and dynamic personality. But I have to admit that I got tired of the visual of Dusty's saggy pants that defy gravity (something that is just a personal pet peeve for me in real life so it did not make him more appealing to me.)

They both have secrets. All along the mystery slowly unravels of what happened to both of them in the past to make them change. And the mystery kept driving me crazy trying to figure it out. There were surprising plot twists and connections. I have to admit that the pacing was a little slow for me at times especially at the beginning. Their resisting without obvious reasons and incredible sexual tension was a bit frustrating, and I was ready to find out what all of the underlying issues were causing them to retreat. It did get more emotional and hopeful as it went on, but then it almost became rushed. The characters were both broken, but were able to understand enough to encourage the other to heal. But trust and opening up took a long time.

And all of the supporting characters also had a hand in helping these two become attached and live life again. I enjoyed spending more time with Hunter, Taylor, Darah, Mase, Renee, and Paul. They are such a tight group of friends and all of them living under one roof was kind of a madhouse at times, but their witty banter and humor was entertaining. I still adore Hunter and Mase. They are such funny, sweet, and devoted guys. It was enjoyable to see the relationships of the couples from the first book continue to be fun, supportive, loving, and progress. Renee was an overbearing big sister, but her heart was in the right place. But sometimes I really wanted to tell her to just chill out. I really loved Jos' new, unique friend Hannah. She was feisty and strong despite some challenges she faced. Her attitude was inspiring and just what Jos needed. I would like to see her as a main character in her own story.

This story was about facing demons, forgiveness, opening up, and moving forward. It was full of sexual tension, some angst, secrets, and drama. The mystery of their pasts was intriguing and kept me reading. I can't say that I liked it quite as much as My Favorite Mistake, but it was nice revisiting with the gang.

Thanks to Chelsea M. Cameron, Harlequin HQN, and Netgalley for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Kims's 4 star review

Two secrets. One bet. Who will break first?

Taylor Caldwell can't decide if she wants to kiss her new college roommate or punch him.

On the one hand, Hunter Zaccadelli is a handsome blue-eyed bundle of charm. On the other, he's a tattooed, guitar-playing bad boy. Maybe that's why Taylor's afraid of falling in love with him, or anyone else. She doesn't want to get burned, so she needs him gone before it's too late.

Hunter himself has been burned before, but Taylor's sexy laugh and refusal to let him get away with anything make her irresistible. Determined not to be kicked out of her life without a fight, Hunter proposes a bet: if she can convince him she either truly loves or hates him, he'll leave the apartment—and leave her alone.

But when the man behind Taylor's fear of giving up her heart resurfaces, she has to decide: trust Hunter with her greatest secret, or do everything in her power to win that bet and drive him away forever.
