Twisted Ties (Ties#2)
Book 2 of 2

Two years ago, Emma Preston walked away from Jesse Daniels. It is a decision she has regretted ever since. Plagued with the knowledge that Ally’s lies tore them apart, Emma enlists Jesse’s former best friend, Andy, to help her search for him.

When he left California, Jesse was determined to start over in West Virginia with his mother. Now, the past is determined to catch up with him—first, with the appearance of Ally, and when Emma and Andy come back into his life.

Just when Emma thinks she’s found Jesse, a dark secret and misunderstandings force them apart before they can even reconnect. Jesse is torn between his love for Emma and protecting his childhood friend, Ally. Ally has an agenda of her own, and she’s not about to let Emma get in her way—even if that means getting rid of her… permanently.

Can Emma and Jesse’s relationship survive all of their twisted ties?

“So, what are you going to do?”
“I need to talk to Ally first and tell her that you know. She’ll be angry
with me, but once she figures out that you’re not going to go out and do
something stupid, I think she’ll be okay. After that, I’m going to talk with
Emma. I said some really horrible shit to her tonight. I accused her of
sleeping with you since that’s what Ally told me.”
“Shit. Jesse, I need to talk to you about something.”
I was instantly on alert as I felt him tense beside me. “What?”
“I…okay, first off, it wasn’t something that either of us meant to do.”
“Andy, just tell me what the hell you’re talking about.”
He looked up at me, his eyes filled with remorse. “I slept with Emma.”

In Shattered Ties we met two high school kids In California from opposite sides of the tracks. Emma is the misunderstood rich girl and Jesse is the smart boy from the trailer park. They shared a connection and love, but had someone plotting against them to break them apart. Secrets, lies, and betrayals broke their hearts and separated them. Jesse not only lost Emma, but also lost touch with his childhood friends Andy and his sister Ally.

Two years later, Emma is still pining for Jesse. She is now friends with his former best friend Andy and they go to the college in West Virginia that they think Jesse might attend. But Andy's sister Ally also has the same idea of reconnecting with Jesse.

It is a total angstfest of manipulation, lies, half-truths, misunderstandings, and miscommunication. There is so much drama and so many mistakes are made. I might have actually growled in frustration a few times. It was riddled with misconceptions, "he said, she said", open mouth and insert foot disease, anger, hurt, and jealousy. I wanted to lock both Jesse and Emma in a room, duct tape one of their mouths at a time to force them to listen effectively to the other.

But then just as things begin to finally settle down and it looks like happiness is on the horizon...BAM! Here comes serious intense drama and suspense. They are thrust into dealing with something none of them could have imagined with long lasting repercussions.

I really liked Jesse and Emma together.  I loved Andy too. He is funny, cocky, flirty, and I would love to see this confirmed man-whore get his own book. I seriously wanted to hug Andy for his humor and support, while backslapping his sister for her behavior. I seriously do not think I have hated a character as much as I hated Ally in quite a while. But I did like Emma's new friend Abby who is  fun, sweet, and shy.

There were definite twists and turns in this book as it shifted to a darker, suspenseful, emotional read. It got really intense, put me on edge, and hurt my heart. It sent the characters in an unexpected direction that profoundly affected them. We got both Emma and Jesse's points of view that helped us see their confusion, misunderstandings, deep feelings, and fear. They had to face demons, guilt, and pain. We saw this couple and these friends go through so much together. It was angsty, romantic, sweet, intense, emotional, and definitely twisted. This is one of those books that you do not want to say too much so as not to spoil anything. But I enjoyed the conclusion to Emma and Jesse's story.

Thanks to K.A. Robinson for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

With a former supermodel mother and a rock-and-roll legend father, Emma Preston has the best of everything. Nothing is as perfect as it seems though. After her parents divorce, she’s forced to live with her mother in a private Santa Monica community. Ignoring their parental roles, her mother becomes more focused on climbing the social ladder while her father is off on tour.

Growing up in a trailer park with his mother, Jesse is used to people looking down on him. When his mother begs him to submit an application for a scholarship to one of Santa Monica’s top private schools, he never expects to actually get it. When he does, he is forced to attend school with a bunch of rich kids. He ignores their stares as they judge him for having tattoos and a less than impressive car. As long as he has his surfboard and the guys at the tattoo shop, he knows he can make it through.

When Jesse shows up on the first day of school, Emma can’t help but be intrigued. Her mother would never approve of Emma talking to someone so poor, but she doesn’t care because something about Jesse draws her to him.

Jesse tries to hate Emma, but he discovers that he can’t resist her. Forced to hide their relationship from Emma’s mother and everyone else around them, things start to fall apart. When Jesse’s friend, Ally, decides to interfere, things go from bad to worse.

Can they survive their first love? Or will they be left with nothing more than shattered ties?
