Sam and Nick don’t get much down time, but a trip to the beach is exactly what they need. Though they have to keep Secret Service with them, the time away from work responsibilities at the end of summer is a perfect way to recharge. No sooner do they return, when Sam is faced with a new case: a teenage drive-by victim and a fear that sweeps the city. Nick has his own challenges to wrestle with at work, challenges that could change everything he thought he wanted.
Sam Holland and Nick Cappuano embody working professionals trying to juggle their high profile careers and their family. I love that each time we see this couple, they are faced with new challenges that challenge them to be strong for each other and with each other. The way they are in public and the way they are behind closed doors is refreshing and comforting.
Sam’s case in #12 kept me gripped in the same fear as the rest of the city. As she and her team get closer to figuring out the why and who, my heart broke for the victims, their families, and the unexpected connections and consequences.
Nick’s professional dilema keeps him working hard to find a solution, but he is never too busy to take time to listen to his cop wife. I love the care he shows her, allowing her to be as strong as she needs, but also to show her vulnerability when she needs.
The Fatal series never fails to keep me on the edge of my seat, turning pages as fast as I can read. I love that it is one part police procedural, one part political drama, and one part romance. Each aspect of the story works together to drive this couple to be their best professionally and to work through how to fit the personal relationship amidst the professional challenges.
