The dark secret Kayden has kept hidden for years is out. Worse, he's facing charges for battery. The only way he stands a chance against the charges is if Callie speaks up, something he'll never ask her to do.

Callie knows Kayden is going back to his dark place and desperately wants to save him. But saving him means admitting her secrets aloud. Callie and Kayden are stronger than they think, especially when they're together. Together they move forward, face their demons, and finally start to heal from their traumatic pasts.

There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.

Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.

For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was  okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.

Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.

Do not read this book or review unless you have read book one: The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden!

This book starts soon after the brutal cliffhanger in The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden. It is heartbeaking, tense, and frustrating to see Callie want to to be there for Kayden but to not be able to. Kayden is broken, hurt, and isolated. He has so much going against him and feels guilt ridden and ashamed. But he still feels protective of Callie and only wants what is best for her. But he does not feel like he is good for anybody.

It's for the best, though. Callie can go on living her life and she can be happy not having to deal with my problems. I'll stay here and keep my eyes shut and hold onto the memory of her for as long as I can because that's what keeps me breathing.

Callie is gaining strength and just wants to help. But she can't if he won't let her. She is still hiding her own secrets from others, but not from him. Her past still haunts her, but she is growing more and more and slowly finding her own way with the support of their friends. But she is determined to find a way to reach Kayden.

I wish for happiness in a world full of sorrow. There's always so much pain and I wish for all of it to be gone. Of course, wishes are just wishes, just hope for a speck of light in a dark field. When I analyze my wish for Kayden, I get terrified at what it means. If I'm willing to take brokenness and shattering of my childhood in exchange for the removal of his, then how deep are my feelings for him? And am I ready to handle them?

You can feel their pain, their need to be together and their fear for each other. They both know what they really want and need to be happy, but are not sure they can handle the consequences. It is not a quick, easy journey for these two. Their lives have always been hard so of course a relationship was bound to be complicated and challenging. But eventually they cannot deny their need and passion and they begin to realize that they are truly stronger together and worthy of love and support. They are so damaged, but slowly they are putting each other back together and making positive strides towards healing. With each other's support, they learn to find their own voice, open up, and stand up for themselves. As much as I could feel their pain and fear in the first part of the book, I could almost feel it as it begin to slowly recede in the last part. They are not perfect and never will be. Their lives are not pretty. They have a lot of baggage and challenges to face. It was a long,  torturous, and painful journey towards healing and forgiveness. But it is also uplifting, heartfelt, and beautiful. These characters are so intense, passionate, troubled, and damaged. But they literally breathe, bleed, and fully dig themselves into your heart.

Maybe if I try hard enough, we'll fall into each other and become one single person and we can share our pain instead of carrying it by ourselves.

I realize how perfect we are for each other and also how disastrous we could end up being. Because even though we can help each other pick up the pieces of our lives, we could also break at the same time and then nothing would be left to catch us as we crumble.

His best friend Luke and her best friend Seth are faithful sidekicks, but also have their own life and family issues. I enjoyed Seth's humor and seeing his developing relationship. And they were so good to Callie during this trying time. Together they are quite a troubled foursome, but one that supports each other during the hard times as well as the good ones.

I knew about halfway through this book that Luke was going to have to have his own book and share his story. It was just obvious. He definitely has secrets, walls, tragedies and some freaky family dynamics in his past. And Callie's room mate Violet is edgy, stand offish and is obviously hiding her own issues. They should be quite a pairing in The Destiny of Luke and Violet(book 3).

Jessica Sorensen writes with such passion, emotion, pain, and depth. You feel every single emotion good and bad that these intense characters go through. The alternating points of view provide a direct line into each character's thought process and feelings. It is so important with these two since at times they have trouble communicating effectively. This series is poignant, gut wrenching, uplifting, and exceptional. This couple is deeply entrenched in my heart and mind. Their story is a twisted f**ked up fairy tale with a positive message. And it is one I will never forget.
