Desperate to break free…

I've spent my entire life under my father’s thumb, but now I'm finally free to make my own choices. When my roommate dragged me to my first college party, I met Finn Coram and my life turned inside out. He knows how to break the rules and is everything I never knew I wanted. A Marine by day and surfer by night, he pushes me away even as our attraction brings us closer. Now I am finally free to do whatever I want. I know what I want. I choose Finn.

Trying to play by the rules...

I always follow orders. My job, my life, depends on it. I thought this job would be easy, all the rules were made crystal clear, but when I met Carrie Wallington, everything got muddy. She's a rule I know I shouldn't break, but damn if I don’t inch closer to the breaking point each time I see her. I’m ready to step out of line. And even worse? I’m living a lie. They say the truth will set you free, but in my case…

The truth will cost me everything.

Carrie is a Senator's daughter just trying to get out from under Daddy's thumb and have her own life and adventures at College in California. She meets Finn who enjoys surfing and says he is also a Marine. But little does she know Daddy planted him as security detail for his little girl.

"I think you look like a good girl who wants to try her hand at being a bad girl."

He's there to protect her. She is unaware. But can he protect their hearts from getting involved?

My job was to serve. Protect. Keep my cover. And Most of all? Not touch her. The bad thing was, I couldn't seem to stop thinking about it. For some reason, the little socialite who wasn't really a socialite was getting under my skin, and I had to find a way to get her out before it was too late.

He knows she is off limits. He knows it could cost him his career. He went there prepared to watch over a spoiled brat rich girl, but found a smart, funny, caring and generous woman. The more he learns about Carrie, the more he is drawn in. He tries to resist her. He tries so hard  to follow the rules. His efforts to do the right thing just confuse them both with his indecision. It is a roller coaster of emotions, denial, confusion, and hurt feelings. But he was really trying to protect her as well as himself.

I really loved Finn. He was a good guy. He was funny, sweet, and felt strongly. He surfs, rides a motorcycle, and is hot, tattooed alpha male with a soft and vulnerable side. He was protective, possessive, guilt ridden, and conflicted. He kept sending her mixed messages as he tried to resist. It was hard to for her to keep up with his flipping back and forth. But with Finn, she finds a connection,  freedom and desire she has never known. She was a strong female character even if she was a little "dorky" and "awkward.". Even though she was the rich Senator's daughter, she felt strongly about giving back to the community and sharing with the less fortunate. And she was a woman trying to find her own way and live her own life after living a sheltered existence with controlling parents. Sure she was immature at times, but she was young and was not used to dealing with relationships. And she had major trust issues stemming from her past.

He watched me as if he couldn't get his mind off me, and yet he kept insisting he couldn't have me. Heaven forbid another man looked my way though. he'd be all over the guy in two seconds flat just like a  jealous boyfriend. All the cons without the pros.

She was everything I would have hoped for in a girlfriend, and then some. Kind. Giving. Adventurous. Never afraid to try something new. And I wasn't allowed to have her.

When they were together, they had witty rapport, chemistry, and enjoyed spending time together. But his secret had the ability to ruin any chance they could have at something real. It had the potential to shatter the trust they shared and ruin all that he has worked for.

How will she feel when she finds out their whole relationship is based on a lie? And what repercussions will that have for both of their lives?

It ended with a bit of a mystery. Their story is not over. There is definitely more story to tell and will continue into the next book. But I was not left feeling unsatisfied either. It was a funny, sweet, romance with an undercurrent of secrets and lies. It was well written, flowed smoothly in both points of view, and had likable characters. I am looking forward to more with Finn and Carrie.

Thanks to Jen McClaughlin for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.
