Four years ago, my dreams were shattered in an instant.
I tried to pick up the pieces and glue them back together the best I knew how, but something was always missing.
A father for my two girls.
But then, Brody Murphy landed on my doorstep, literally. He was a carefree, playful hockey player who barged into my life and messed with my head. He left me more confused than I had ever been.
What if the one thing I thought I needed was the only thing holding me back?
Teaser:
My mind reeled with what I could say
or do in that ten feet she had left to walk to make her stay out here and get
things back to normal.
Light bulb moment!
“Kacie!” I called out in a loud
whisper. By the time she turned around, I had pulled my t-shirt off and dropped
my jeans down around my ankles, standing there in nothing but my boxer briefs.
“Oh my God! What are you doing?” She
giggled and covered her eyes the way I had earlier.
“I thought it was only fair. I’ve
seen you, now you’ve seen me and we can go back to normal.”
She peeked
through her fingers at me, closing them quickly when she realized I was in no
rush to get dressed again. She continued chuckling and said in a muffled tone,
“Put your clothes back on, you lunatic.”
4 to 4.5 stars
This book was just what I needed. It was a breath of fresh air after a few really dark, emotional reads that I just completed. It was funny, sweet, romantic, and heartwarming even though the heroine also had some underlying emotional issues. But it was still easy to read and completely enjoyable.
Kacie is a single mother living with her own mother and helping to run an Inn. She has precocious 5 year old twins, is in nursing school, and cooks at the Inn so she has little time for entanglements. And she has been burned in the past so she has deep trust issues and fears of getting close to anyone.

A horrible storm, lands Brody Murpy at their door step. He is charming, down to Earth, and magnetic. He is fascinated by the sweet, sassy, real Kacie. Their interactions are funny and genuine. I loved seeing their connection naturally develop.
When I stopped at your inn for the night, my life was normal--my life was hockey. Nothing important existed outside of the rink; it was all just filler. Then I met you. You did something to me, changed something.
He crashed into my life and shook it up like a snowglobe. I had no idea my life needed him so bad.
Their pairing was complicated by distance, different backgrounds, and her issues.. They lived in two different worlds as Brody is a pro hockey player, and his world had its own set of complications. It was hard for her to see how their two lives could ever mesh.
They had so much chemistry and such a wonderful rapport together. The building of their relationship was based on actual talking and getting to know each other. I smiled every time they found time together. It had steamy scenes, but they were secondary to the story.
Brody was an awesome book boyfriend. He was completely swoon worthy! He was loving, sweet, and attentive to her and her girls. Even though he lived in a world of riches and fame, he was not ruled by it. He valued family and friends. He tried really hard and got confused and shot down at times. But he was stubborn enough to care and keep challenging her even as she pushed him away. Brody's relationship with the girls totally melted my heart. He put fun fun a little adventure into all of their lives.
"Life is a sum made up of small parts. Kacie. Some are good; some are bad. You and the girls are definitely one of the good. The best good there is and I'll fight like hell to keep you here."
But Kacie's issues and fight or flight syndromes kept getting in the way. She was such a good mom and was used to putting her own needs second. She was ruled by fear and wanted to keep things in control. Even her friends called her a "runner". But she was not unlikable. Just more confused and afraid of taking that leap. But Brody kept pushing his way in.
"You were so scared, Kacie, just like you are about life. I wanted you to see that sometimes, even when something terrifies you, if you just give it a chance it's actually pretty incredible."
The side characters were interesting and entertaining. The little girls Lucy and Piper were completely adorable. Their family and friends provided more humor and acted as sounding boards for the couple. There were a few characters that I wanted to throttle as they caused drama.
They had struggles, misunderstanding, and tense situations. But I enjoyed every page of this adult romance. Even though Kacie was twenty-four, she was mature so it was not a dramatic, angsty NA type of read. I thought their story was heading for an ending that would be tied up in a neat little bow, but at the end she gives us just a hint that the there is more story coming.
I enjoyed Beth Ehemann's engaging writing style. It was a delightful romantic read with endearing characters and just enough drama to keep it interesting. I inhaled this book in one sitting. It really just warmed my heart and made me smile. Even though there were a few parts that had me frustrated, sad, and tense. I loved getting both Kacie and Brody's points of view. And I am looking forward to more in this series and this couple in the future.
Thanks to Beth Ehemann for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.
