Sixteen years is a long time to wait for your true love to reappear, and, anyway, Nicki Johnson couldn’t wait for the impossible to happen. Hard life lessons have taught her that fairy tales are children’s stories, and fate is cruel. Burying her hopes, she’s spent the last sixteen years focused and driven toward her career, and it’s landed her with a job at the White House with a gem of a boyfriend. But when her high school love, Adam Kincaid, walks into the White House as a BBC reporter, Nicki’s world is thrown into turmoil as she relives their past. Adam has come back for her, but has he arrived too late?

"It's an emotional story that will take the reader back to those feelings that made the late teen years such a powerful time."

Late one night Nicki Johnson plays with emotional fire and Googles her high school love, only to find his name splashed across the British gossip columns. Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life.

Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?

The story of Adam Kincaid, it's the last in the Heart Series.

From the author's website:

Book 2 is Nicki’s story of the second half, while book 3 is Adam’s. I promise book 3 isn’t just a regurgitation of book 2. : )

Since I was young, I hated the saying that everything happened for a reason--like there was some invisible metaphysical hand maneuvering us through life. If fate existed, it sucked.

We finally get to the point where Adam Kincaid and Nicki Johnson are reunited after sixteen years. We learned of their past in Beside Your Heart where they became close friends, shared everything, and fell in love while he was relocated to the US from England for one year while in High School. And we know that when he left to return to England, it broke both of their hearts. But Nicki felt that staying in touch would just be harder in the long run.
But so many years later, now their careers have followed a path that puts them in close proximity due to a choice Adam made. So close that is is actually against the rules to fraternize and could cause a political scandal.  And they both are also involved with other people.

But their connection, their history, their unresolved feelings bind them together in a way that is hard to deny. As they spend time together and rekindle their friendship, their feelings heat up as well.

I loved Adam in the first book and even more so now. He has matured into a sexy, hot alpha that also has a good heart, strong feelings, and knows what he wants. He is funny and playful, strong and sweet. He understands her more than just about anyone since he was one of the few people she has shared her deepest sorrows and fears with. He is supportive and caring and has been since they first met as friends.

And Nicole has come a long way from the shattered girl who was plagued by loss and scars. She is independent, determined, smart, and highly successful. She still has issues that haunt her, but has moved on as best she can. She is a woman in a powerful position, but still feminine and soft. I cannot say I agreed with all of her choices, but considering how much and how quickly her life was changing, I could understand how it would be hard to deal with. But considering where she was emotionally in the first book, she has made so much progress.

Together they have a deep, meaningful connection that transcends time and distance. Their chemistry is steamy and their feelings never really disappeared. But their lives are complicated. There are challenges from work, relationships, fears, insecurities, jealousy, and busy schedules. And their decisions have a bigger impact than just in their own personal lives.

"If we dwell on all the obstacles between us, we'll never get anywhere."

"Then think. Think about why you won't. What else is holding you back?...I'll tell you, in the grand scheme of things, whatever it is, it's not important. You're what's important  to me. And from what you've said, I'm important to you. So let's stop pissing around and get the f*** on with our lives."

Can they deny themselves a second  chance at happiness? Or will it mean the end of one of their careers?

I have enjoyed this series so far. I will admit that they build a little slowly. That the author keeps you tense and waiting for their big moments to happen and considering the whole first book was really a build up to their reunion, that is quite a long, tense build up. But she succeeds in making you love these characters and their flaws. Not only Adam and Nicole, but also crazy friends and family(I loved her best friend Lisa, his cocky cousin David, and his wacky sister Sylvia), and even some of the more serious characters are loyal and have heart and integrity. There is humor, tension(sexual and otherwise), guilt, fear, friendship, love, and hope. It is a sweet story of second chance love and fate. It was told in Nicole's point of view except the last chapter.  The third book Forever Your Heart will be in Adam's point of view and his story. But after reading this, I felt that the story ended in a good place. But I am still excited to see more of Adam's thoughts and feelings and maybe a bit more into the future as well..
