He never wanted to be a hero…until she needed him to be.

Strength…

It took Kennedy Moore years to put her life back together after Reese Spencer shattered it. But she did. Now, years later, strong and independent, she is in pursuit of a single dream—to dance with the Altman American Dance Theater. Unfortunately, Kennedy is learning that a girl from nowhere with no money and no contacts might never be able to reach her goal.

That is, until Reese reappears, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that Kennedy just can’t refuse. In exchange for working on his yacht for a few short weeks, he’ll get her an audition with the famous dance troupe. All Kennedy has to do is keep her head down, work hard and resist Reese. That sounds easy enough, right?

Weakness…

Reese doesn’t want to make it easy for Kennedy. Seeing her again has started a fire in his blood—an unwelcome one. It took him years to forget about her before, so this time he has a plan. It’s simple: Get Kennedy on his yacht, seduce her, get her out of his system, move on with his life. That sounds easy enough, right?

But the one thing Reese didn’t plan for was Kennedy herself—a girl so strong yet so broken, she makes him want to rescue her, to take care of her. To save her. Even if he has to save her from himself.

The draw, like gravity. The desire, like obsession. The pain, like annihilation. I thought I was over him. For years, I've thought I was over him, but seeing him again...God, it was like being hit by a car going ninety miles an hour. All over again. The instant I saw him, everything I ever felt for him came crashing back down on me, like an avalanche. One that it took me half my life to crawl out from under.

This is a moving, second chance love story. Reese and Kennedy spent time together as teens. They were first loves. Kennedy put a lot of faith in Reese and needed him. But Reese just left and Kennedy was confused and heartbroken.

Fourteen years later, their paths cross again. He is  a rich, successful  playboy. He owns men's clubs, yachts, and businesses. He is a womanizer and does not want attachments. While enjoying a night out at one of his clubs with his brother Hemi, his girlfriend Sloane, and her brother Sig (that we met in All the Pretty Lies), he sees a vision on the dance floor that causes an immediate reaction in him. And it turns out to be the girl from his past, Kennedy. He is ready to jump right back into at least a physical relationship with her. But she doesn't want anything to do with him hurting her again

Reese is charming, irresistable, and their chemistry is still strong. He is used to getting what he wants and he wants Kennedy. But she is stronger now and  is afraid to trust him. He  broke her heart and her life was never really the same. But he will use any means to get his way, so he makes her an offer she cannot refuse. Soon she is spending time working with him. And the more they are together, the more he tries to break down her defenses. He is relentless and is prepared to win. She tries to resist since she knows it is in her best interest, but he makes it very difficult.

"Just don't expect me to help you resist me, Kennedy. In fact, I promised you that I'll make it as hard as I can."

Kennedy is feisty, sweet, fearful, and guarded. She does not want to get sucked in by Reese and get hurt again. Her past scarred her and she has secret pain. But she has regained her strength, forged her own path, and has her own goals.

I have loved him and hated him with equal measure. Why can't I just not care?

Reese is sexy, flirty, bossy, possessive, protective and emotionally detached. He is used to having things his way and having anything he wants at any time. For someone so smart, he could act like an idiot sometimes when it came to women. But there were also times that he showed a softer side. Even though at first he was arrogant and cocky and at times I wanted to shake him, he really grew on me.

This story was told in both points of view so we got to see the contrast between young, naive teens to jaded, untrusting adults. They shared a spark that persevered over fourteen years of separation and was immediately rekindled. No matter how much they denied, it was impossible to resist. Reese was a man who lost his way on his path to success. He thought he had everything he wanted: success, money, and power. But did not realize how much he was really missing and how empty his life was. I enjoyed the growth in his character and seeing the more emotional, vulnerable man under the facade.

This book focused on priorities, trust, and commitment. At times each of them needed a bit of saving. They both had their strengths and weaknesses and needed to figure out what they could live with and what they could not live without. It was humorous, frustrating, tense, heart breaking, steamy, poignant, and hopeful.

Like with the first book, there were some surprising secrets and plot twists that slowly unfolded throughout the course of the story. I was intrigued by their past throughout and was shocked by some of the secrets. But as the layers were peeled back, it all came together. This was an enjoyable second installment to this series and there is so much potential for more with their other brothers. I enjoyed spending time with Hemi, Sloane, and Sig from All the Pretty Lies. I really love Sig. He is hilarious and an alpha personality in his own right. I am hoping that he will get his own story in the near future.

Thanks to M. Leighton for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

“Live, no regrets”

Her…
Sloane Locke has led a sheltered life.  However, with a history like hers, she can understand why her brothers and her father want so much to protect her.  She has gone along with it for twenty long years, but those days are over.  For the girl who never makes promises, Sloane has made a pact with herself that things will change on her twenty-first birthday.  So when the clock strikes midnight, Sloane strikes out to spread her wings and break a few rules.

Him…
In addition to inking skin, Hemi Spencer possesses many talents. Controlling himself has never been one of them.  It’s never had to be.  He’s lived a life of indulgence for as long as he can remember.  Right up until tragedy struck.  Now, he’s nothing but controlled. He’s a man on a mission, one who will let nothing and no one stand in his way.

Them…
Nothing in their lives could’ve prepared Sloane and Hemi for what they’d find in each other—distraction and obsession, love and possession.  But the one thing they can’t find is a future.  Neither one has been totally honest.  And they’ll soon learn that the devil is in the details.  In the details and in the lies.

How far will two people go to live in the now when the now is all they’ve got?
