If you can’t take the heat… stay away from the flame.
Katie Parks has been on her own since the age of fifteen. All she’s ever wanted is a place to call her own—a life that is wholly hers that no one can take away. She thought she finally had it, but with the strike of a single match, everything she worked so hard for is reduced to a pile of smoking ash. And she almost is too.
Now she’s being stalked by someone who’s decided it’s her time to die. The only thing standing in the path of her blazing death is sexy firefighter Holt Arkain.
Katie’s body might be safe with Holt… but her heart is another story.
As the danger heats up, sparks fly and the only thing Katie knows for sure is that her whole life is about to go up in flames.
Home was a place I always felt safe. But I wasn't safe. Not right now. This is it. The last moments of my life. I'm going to die alone.
Katie wakes up in her own home tied up being burned alive. Yep, that is how this story grabs you from the first minute. Just as she is about to give up, a hero emerges through the flames. When she wakes up at the hospital, she meets Holt, the firefighter that saved saved her life. For some reason, he just could not forget her and continues to show up to check on her.
Katie did not have anyone in her life. Orphaned at 15, she spent a few years in the foster care system, and the only thing she had to call her own was her now burned down home. Before she knows it, Holt is taking care of her. And the one random event that almost ended her life does not appear random anymore as danger follows her. It becomes a pulse pounding, never ending string of dangerous situations all in an attempt to kill her. But they have no idea who would want her dead or why.
During it all, a sweet, passionate connection is forged between them. Holt is patient, caring, protective, and determined to keep her safe and close. He is also sexy, funny, and completely charming. Katie is strong, independent, and sweet. She has lived a hard life so is not some wilting flower that will just give up. Together their chemistry is scorching hot and they make a wonderful couple...if they can just live long enough.
"I realized you could handle the heat."
"Well, you are definitely hot."
"How hot?"
"Well, you are definitely hot."
"How hot?"
"So hot your touch leaves torch marks on my skin."
"Damn, I'm good."
How could I promise him a future when I wasn't even sure I would live through today?
This story grabbed me from the first page, flowed well at a fast pace, kept me interested, and was full of danger and suspense. It was also sweet and steamy. I loved the characters who were totally likable and had witty rapport. The mystery surrounding the stalking and attempts on her life was a surprise. I will admit that some of the dangerous scenarios were a little dramatic and the outcomes a tad unrealistic. But it was still a fast, fun, and action packed read. A great start to this new contemporary series and I will definitely check out the next one.
Thanks to Cambria Hebert, Indie Inked, and Netgalley for providing me a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
