Cooper has layers of guilt, pain, and resentment bearing down on him and also regrets for his own past decisions. He has lived his recent life in relative numbness. But now he is tortured by wanting her, but has fear of hurting her again or getting hurt himself. He can't fully face their past and cannot seem to believe in a future. It was heartbreaking to see his longing, pain, and feelings of hopelessness. He runs hot and cold, and the push and pull between them is downright painful. But he has his own secrets and deep remorse he keeps hidden, and feelings of unworthiness. So he is good at walking away.
Her very presence shifted the ground beneath his feet. He'd thought he was done with the past. With her. But the past wasn't done with him, and neither was she.
She is also affected by guilt, regret, and loss. She has stayed away for self preservation, but now has to face the repercussions of what she left behind. And the guilt of what happened to those she left behind eats at her. There are things that they do not both know and opening up old wounds is overwhelming. But she can't stop her feelings for Cooper from resurrecting any more than he can.
But before they can face the future, they have to face their past. But will that bring them together or break them apart again?
This was an intense, emotional, sexy read. I liked the characters even though my heart broke for them and I got frustrated with their actions. They definitely had emotional baggage that was challenging, painful, and hard to overcome. This might have been a shorter length book, but it packed an emotional punch and made an impact. It was well written in both points of view, had depth, and intensity.
