Anger and pain brought them together, but their passion might just set them free.

Dimitri wants only one thing: revenge. His stepfather, Hendrix, has caused him nothing but pain and heartache. At last Dimitri can take something—someone—important to Hendrix and make him pay: Jess.

Jess is feisty and strong headed. Her past haunts her and connects her to the dangerously dark Dimitri in an unexpected way. Dimitri keeps his secrets locked deep inside, and Jess is drawn to this broken man like no one before.

With little to cling to besides their haunting pasts, both could have been doomed to lives spent raging against the darkness that holds them prisoner. Instead, it seems that as their pain draws them closer together, it is their desire that will set them free.

Dimitri is out for revenge against Hendrix, his stepfather and the person he blames for the pain he has lived with for so long.By kidnapping Jess off the ship, Dimitri means to make Hendrix pay.

Jess is hiding from a dark past, one that haunts her dreams and sent her running to a pirate ship for safety in the first place. Now that she finds herself kidnapped, she wants nothing more than to return to the relative safety of the ship.

As Dimitri and Jessica get to know each other, they realize they have more in common than either would have imagined. They begin to share things with each other that no one else knows and in the process develop a connection that moves beyond their initial circumstances.

I was worried about this feeling a little stockholm-syndrome-esque. With the way Enslaved by the Ocean ended, I was left wondering how a kidnapping would turn into a romance. But despite my hesitations, I was curious enough about what would happen to Jess that I waited patiently for the arrival of her story. Learning more about Dimitri and his past, and the circumstances that brought Jess to Hendrix’s ship in the first place, and the first few chapters of Darkness, it was clear that there was more going on here than a simple kidnapping.

There were times where I had a hard time connecting with the characters and felt they were one sided. There were a lot of rash decisions made without considering consequences, motivations, or the whys behind reactions, which made it hard to for me to be emphatic at times. But it was a quick moving story with several twists that surprised me.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.
