She's playing with fire...
Dog trainer Cara Bailey wants to find "the one," but fantasizing about her sexy-as-hell client, firefighter Travis Jansen, is getting in the way. Her only option? Get the confirmed bachelor out of her system-in every position possible-so she can settle down with Mr. Right. Starting right now.
Travis doesn't do relationships, so no matter how badly he wants the pretty little brunette, he keeps his distance. Until Cara goes and changes the game. She'll fulfill all of his fantasies if he agrees to walk away when it's over. But when the wildfire between them blazes out of control, it will consume everything-and everyone-in its path...
“So you want dog training and sex?” he asked, still sure he was hearing things—like, his wildest fantasies coming true.
“Yes. The perfect combo.”
“Okay. And not that I’m protesting, because let me make it clear, my answer is yes, fuck yes, and absofuckinglutely yes, but why the change?”
She let go of his hands to stand up, then sank back down, straddling him. Oh, hell. There went any breathing room in his jeans. His dick did its best approximation of a flagpole.
She cupped his shoulders, looking him square in the eyes. Being this close to her was dizzying, and an absolute rush. “Because, Travis, I can’t get you out of my head. Or my body. I went on a date the other night with the nicest guy around. I think there could be something real with him,” she said, and he bristled and nearly breathed fire. The image of her on a date with someone else made his gut twist. “But all I could think about when I was out with him was sleeping with you and all the ways I want to have sex with you.” His head was fever hot. A tremor of lust slammed into him, and he grasped her waist, digging his fingers into her hipbones.
“There are so many ways I want to have you, Cara,” he whispered, hot and rough against the delicate skin of her throat, savoring the way gooseflesh rose instantly on her skin.
“And that’s what I need. You gave me the best sex of my life, starting way back when we were in high school, which is crazy in and of itself. But so it goes, and no one compares to you. Not that I have a ton of experience, but the way I see it is, I will never be able to move on and have the dream— the white picket fence, and the family, and all those things I want—if I’m still thinking of how good it is with you.”
“Don’t forget about the time after college graduation on the picnic table in the woods by the river. And then that night three years ago when you were back in town for Alycia’s holiday party, and I kissed you under the mistletoe at the party after you sang that song, and you pulled me into a coat closet and insisted on having me right then and there,” he said.
She dropped her face into her hands. “See? That’s my point,” she muttered, and then looked up at him. “All those times are messing with my head. And I can’t seem to connect with anyone else because I’m hung up on you. So the only conclusion I can come to is, if I’m ever going to meet Mr. Right, I need to get Mr. Wrong out of my system.”
I have to start this by saying I have strongly suggested (OK... maybe actually harassed) Lauren Blakely to write a book for Travis after being intrigued by him in the previous books Burn for Me and Melt For Him. He is Megan's brother and friends with all of other characters Smith, Jamie, and Becker. And I thought there might be something lurking with him and the local dog trainer, Cara. Travis and Cara have history and current lust between them. But they want different things out of life. She wants love, commitment, family, and the white picket fence. He can only handle casual sex and no strings.
But they can't get each other off their minds. They both come up with a proposition that will have them spending more time together but should still allow them to walk away when done--both getting what they want and hopefully have each other out of their systems so they can move on. The perfect plan? Maybe...Maybe not...
Travis is a sexy-as-hell firefighter with a card shark's analytical mind, sharp wit, and a giving heart. But he has deep seated fears. His past has marked him and made him swear off ever having a real relationship where he could be hurt.
Cara is sassy, quirky, and sweet. She is good at training the responses in the dogs she works with, but dealing with men is a whole different scenario. She longs for real love, stability, and kids. But Travis and their history fans the flames of her desires, and no other stable man can seem to compare. She needs to get him out of her system, so she can find someone who will give her what she needs.
They have a flirty rapport, hot chemistry, similar sense of humor, and a fierce attraction. But they've always had an expiration date in their past and now in their present. Travis will not do anything long term. He has seen the pitfalls of relationships, analyzed the risk, and deemed it unsafe for him.
Cara knows she should guard her heart, but finds it increasingly difficult the more she is around him. The more heated they become, the more dangerous it is for her. Travis is one stubborn man with definite ideas and fears. Can she ever convince him to go all in and take the risk?
I loved Travis even when I wanted to smack him for being dense and strong-willed. I had faith he had it him to be the romantic, loving guy. I adored Cara. She was such spunk and fire, but was also sweet. They had passion, but also a strong connection. They just had issues with communication and being on the same page. Oh yeah and that Travis was a bit blind and strong-willed.
I was thrilled to get more with the other Hidden Oaks couples Smith and Jamie, and Becker and Megan. Their lives are all intertwined, and their friendships and bonds are strong. They are not afraid to meddle, taunt, tease, or push each other and they add more humor too. We even get a visit from another side character from another series who tends to show up when gambling is involved and I love when we see little connections between her books. And it is hard to resist sweet doggy sidekicks like Henry, Violet, and Chance. They really were quite the characters themselves.
I was immediately sucked back into life in Hidden Oaks and was rooting for Travis and Cara the whole time. I am so glad that Lauren wrote Travis' story and I was not disappointed. I have become attached to all of these couples. Travis falls somewhere around halfway on the scale between Smith's funny, sweet personality and Becker's troubled, brooding one. They are all quite the sexy dirty talkers though and needed strong women to compliment them.

Cara Bailey wants to find the one. Travis Jansen doesn’t do relationships. When Cara suggests they hook up with a time limit, it seems to both that this is the best of both worlds -- Cara thinks she can work him out of her system, and he thinks he’s getting a great way to get close without commitment. What neither anticipates is that they will only burn hotter the longer they are together, not make things easier to walk away.
These two were fun and flirty, hot and steamy. Having watched them circle each other in the background of the other Fighting Fire novels, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on their story. I loved the premise of prepping Travis’s dog, Henry, for the bachelor auction as the public reason they were spending time together. And I loved watching, somewhat maniacally (cue rubbing my hands together, laughing), as they realized their plan wasn’t working according to plan.
There was more background here than I anticipated getting. Travis and Cara have a history, but they know enough about each other and themselves to think that they are too different to work long term.

Smith, Jamie, Becker and Megan all chime in to give their opinions, encouragement, and swift kicks as necessary. I love the way these men work hard together, and play hard outside of work. When Travis needs a little help, Smith and Becker are there to lend a hand in whatever way needed.

About BURN FOR ME: A sexy category romance novella from Entangled's Brazen imprint...
She’s the one fire he can’t put out…
Jamie Lansing has had it bad for firefighter Smith Grayson for as long as they’ve been friends. Yes, he’s ridiculously charming and she might stare a little too long at his abs, but his dirty-talking, rough-around-the-edges ways aren’t for her. Plus, she knows that as a serial dater, Smith isn’t the type to settle down. But then a terrible, fantastic, mind-blowing mistake leaves her body craving more than one night.
Smith Grayson has only ever had eyes for one woman in town—his best friend Jamie. But convincing her a relationship between them will work is next to impossible with her refusing to see beyond his past. But when she asks for a week of no-strings-attached sex to get him out of her system, Smith knows this is his one chance to prove he’s not just the man she needs in her bed, but the man she needs in her life.
