Hockey star Jackson Maddox and gymnast Pepper Wilson have been best friends since childhood…
Just friends.

When Jackson needs a date to a prestigious party, he calls upon his petite and dazzling BFF to be his arm candy for the night. Nothing could be better than walking into a room with Pepper on his arm. Jackson won’t ever admit how he really feels about her, because they’re…
 Just friends.

With her gymnastics career over, Pepper welcomes a chance to let her freak flag fly—especially with Jackson by her side. Pepper can’t confess she’s loved him since childhood. He’s her best friend, and there’s no reason to jeopardize what they’ve got. But they’re still…
 Just friends.

But when a seemingly harmless game of Truth or Dare gets a little too close and entirely too personal, can Jackson dream up a dare that could give them both what they really want?

Jackson Maddox and Pepper Wilson have been best friends since childhood. He is now a pro hockey player for the Miami Ice. She was an elite gymnast until a recent career ending injury. So she has now moved to Miami to spend time with her friend and get a fresh start.

Jackson wants to help her get back on her feet and find a way to transition to a new career. He's got some influential friends like Alex, Madison, and Ian Dare to help (tie into Carly Phillip's Dare to Love series).

Pepper is sassy, bubbly and vibrant when she is with Jackson. She is fierce and full of life, but pixie sized. But she's also got social anxiety and is a bit klutzy and awkward. Jackson is tall, burly, sexy, outgoing, charming, and dependable. But on the ice he has the tendency to live up to his nick name Mad Dog. Together they look and act like opposites.

Both of them are harboring hidden feelings and attraction. And after being separated for the past few years, being together again is even more intense and a bit different. But both have been hesitant to make the first move and risk ruining their friendship if the other did not reciprocate.

But too many drinks and a game of truth or dare lead to some surprising revelations and a kiss. But was it just a drunken mistake or do they both really want to be more than just friends?

This was a cute, short friends-to-lovers novella. It was funny, steamy, sweet, and romantic. Jackson was a pretty hot hero who liked to push Pepper's boundaries a bit. It was fast-paced and did not have a chance to get into great depth due to the length, but since they had an already established relationship it was not insta-love and their connection was believable. But one night certainly changed everything and moved quickly after that.

The characters were fun, had a good rapport, and seriously hot chemistry. It was told in dual points of view allowing us to understand all of their hidden feelings with some remembrances of their shared childhoods as well. They were a couple that you could not help but like and want to see succeed. They really were so passionate and so compatible in and out of the bedroom. It was a fun, fast read with not a lot of angst.

I have never read Carly Phillip's series, but this was easily read as as stand alone and is not associated with Catherine Gayle's other series either.

Pepper Walters and Jackson Maddox have been best friends since they were kids. When Pepper needs a place to stay as she figures out what to do after her gymnastics career is cut short, and Jackson’s is the perfect place to reinvent herself.

A little game of Truth or Dare turns a little too truthful when Jackson comes up with a dare that challenges everything they’ve convinced themselves of over the years: they are just friends. Right? But as everyone knows, Truth or Dare can quickly get out of hand, and will Pepper and Jackson be able to maintain their friendship if they cross those lines?

Even before the characters dare each other to take things further, the chemistry between these two is off the charts. Though they brush it off as just friends, it is clear that they mean more than that to each other.

This was a fun, short story of friends to lovers. These two were fun characters to read. Pepper and Jackson are opposites in a lot of ways. She is tiny, he is built. She is an introvert and a little on the shy side, he is outgoing and gregarious. They balance each other well though, and their longtime friendship means they know when the other needs a moment or a boost.

Set within Carly Phillips’ Dare to Love Kindle World, Dreaming Up a Dare focuses on a hockey player and his best friend interacting with the characters from the original series. While I haven’t read Carly Phillips’ books, there is enough of the characters, especially Alex from Dare to Desire, that I am intrigued and will have to check them out. It stands alone nicely, and fans of either author will be able to enjoy it without missing a beat.
