The ice is a cold mistress. As the league’s most eligible goalie, Max Fournier has access to his fair share of willing puck bunnies, but right now he’s more interested in bringing home another championship than a one-night stand. A romantic at heart, Max believes in love; he’s just not great at relationships. So when he finally meets a nice girl who’s not blinded by his celebrity, he’s feeling the heat—and the pressure to save her from herself.

Between working two jobs and raising her sister’s kids, Julianne Bradley doesn’t have time for sports—or men. All she knows about Max is that he’s the sexiest customer to ever grace her gas-station counter. And he sees past her tired eyes and makes Jules yearn for things she can’t have: a glamorous fling, a passionate lover, and the time to enjoy both. Max makes her feel like Cinderella, even though Jules has enough baggage to crush a glass slipper. Luckily, he’s no prince—only a fierce competitor determined to win her heart.

Max Fournier is the new goalie for the Cold Fury. He is back from the injured list and ready to focus on the ice.  But one night he comes to the rescue of a young woman whose whole life seems overwhelming. She works two jobs to make ends meet and is now guardian to three kids. Max is used to women wanting him for his fame or money, and the fact that she is unaffected just intrigues him.

Max goes into pursuit mode and he is not afraid to go after what he wants no matter how chaotic or messy. She is more resistant and harder to convince. She feels inferior, overwhelmed, and does not see why he would be interested in her. But Max sees her beauty both inside and out and her inner strength.

Max...OMG! He is the most patient, sweetest, sexiest,  romantic, loving hero with such a huge heart. He is the real Prince Charming. He is accepting of all of the issues in her life. He respects and believes in her and wants to lift her up. He is so generous and giving. He is everything she could ever hope for but is sure she does not deserve. And it is not just about her...her life comes with built in complications.

And Jules not only has some issues with self worth, but she is getting more public scrutiny and people not thinking  her motives are true.  She is stubborn, independent, and does not want to take his help or money. He is really patient and tolerant, but her issues make her anxious and increase self doubt. She is likable and believable. She has so much to deal with and is just trying to do the right thing for everyone. But it is easy for her to get stuck in her own head and worry. She is used to living a challenging life with few resources and hope being a foreign emotion.

But Max just kind of swoops in her life and changes it, while also bringing in some new challenges. Her life is complicated. He lives in the public eye. Nothing is easy or can be achieved without compromise or work.

Will Max be able to handle not being first priority? Can Jules accept all the scrutiny and negative attention that comes with Max? Can she truly trust that she is worthy of him despite what others say?

It all comes down to facing fears, give and take, priorities, commitment, and taking a risk. This book was sweet, swoony, sexy, and had one of the most delightful couples in the series. I absolutely adored them.

I loved getting to spend more time with other couples we have come to love: Alex and Sutton, Garrett and Olivia, Kate and Zack, and Hawke and Vale. This takes place during the same time period as Hawke so we get to see bits of their story in alternate perspectives. I love this team and their significant others and how they are a family. I enjoyed every bit of this modern day Cinderella type story.

Max Fournier is back from injury and focused on bringing his new team to the Stanley Cup. His focus has been squarely on hockey for so long that he doesn’t pay attention to the women that flock to him and his teammates. What he does notice is the convenience store clerk working late one night who is so focused on keeping things together for herself that she doesn't have any clue who he is.

Julianne Bradley has no spare time between working two jobs and trying to take care of her late sister’s three children. She never imagined she would have so little time for herself, but also never imagined she would have to work so hard to keep her family together. The man who comes to her rescue late one night is intriguing to her, but beyond curiosity and a spark of interest, she just doesn’t have time to date.

Max was the perfect hero for Julianne. He was so patient and considerate of everything she was working through that I couldn’t help but swoon at his actions. He was so wrapped up in trying to make things easier for Julianne that he radiated sweetness and perfection in everything he did.

Julianne was one of those main characters that is so focused on her life she doesn’t worry too much about what she is missing. It was so important to her that she keep things distant from Max so as not to be viewed by the team or media as being with him for his money. The distance she insisted on created it’s own set of challenges, but I loved that she wanted to be seen as his equal, not as someone with him only for his money.

I loved watching her struggle to find balance between work, Max, and the kids. Even as the Cold Fury family began wrapping their arms around her, she wasn’t sure she should rely on them when the kids were her responsibility. She was so used to doing things on her own that I couldn’t help but melt as they accepted her into the family.

This was a sweet Cinderella story and another great addition to the Cold Fury family. Some of my favorite Cold Fury past couples are back to support both Max and Julianne. I am looking forward to Roman, as we get a little glimpse into his life in a few key scenes, but only enough to whet my curiosity about him.

Hockey star Alexander Crossman has a reputation as a cold-hearted player on and off the rink. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy… not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.

As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people—like Alex, who’s been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team’s effort to clean up his image. What she doesn’t expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn’t one to cross professional boundaries—and besides, Alex doesn’t do relationships… or does he? The more she sees behind Alex’s bad-boy façade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.

Our 4 star reviews

The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team proves that love is a power play. As Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling series continues, the league’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.
