HAPPILY EVER AFTER…

To some, they’re just words signifying a fairytale ending.

For me, Jack Beauloup, they represent an unyielding desire:

Forever with Darcy Turner, the unexpected love of my life.

A love that has placed her human life in danger.

According to Pack Law, my binding is an abomination that must be severed.

It’s ignited a fiery hatred that I must confront and control.
But what is bound cannot be broken.
I will keep Darcy safe.
Even if it means giving up on my dreams.
Even if it means giving up my life.

Book two begins right where book one left off. Both Darcy and Jack are struggling with anger, frustration, pain, and desperation. But even though Darcy is trying to push Jack away due to his revelations, she also has no choice but to rely on him for help and protection. But lack of control in her own life is difficult for her. And since Jack has returned, her life has been completely out of control.

They both have strong feelings for each other, but their lives are full of impossible situations.  She's fighting him and herself. She's a scientist and logical  thinker so listening to her heart over her head is hard. Jack is used to the intensity of their bond and his own need to be near her. He has to give her time to wrap her head around it and decide what she can and can't live with. The only way to truly win her is for her to choose him herself, trust him, and want him by her own decision separate from their bond or history. And that means her also truly accepting all of the challenges that come along with him. But Darcy can be pretty strong-willed.

Choosing to be with Jack would bring danger and possible repercussions due to their differences. Not everyone would be accepting of a union between the two of them.

Is there an answer that could save both of them and allow them to have their HEA? All of the choices seem to be risky at best including loss of their bond, each other, their families, or even their lives.

This duet was just the change of pace I needed. It immediately sparked my interest and captivated me. The world building was done extremely well, and I felt like it all was almost possible by her vivid descriptions and explanations. I liked that this installment gave us dual points of view in closer succession, because their emotional attachment as well and their individual ideas, fears, and plans were so important in this one.

I adored Jack. He was such an intense, magnetic, devoted hero. He just wanted to love and be loved by Darcy, and to manage his issues so they could find a way to be together. My heart broke for him at times when she would hurt his sensitive feelings or the possibility of a future with her seemed bleak. I liked Darcy even though she could be really frustrating. Her background in botany was interesting and it fit perfectly within the story and their wooded setting. Her stubbornness could be a bad thing or a good thing depending on the situation. They were both intelligent, caring, likable individuals, but they had some obvious differences and obstacles.

The side characters were almost as interesting as the main couple with Willow, Amory, Julien, Lela, Tallis, and Tombeur all having significant roles. I adored the sassy Willow and her character was really fun and unique. This was definitely more frustrating, tense, nerve wracking, challenging, and had more action than the first book. It dealt more with the fall-out from the truth and how she could possibly fit into his world or him into hers. And there were a lot of outside influences to deal with. But their connection and devotion was at the heart of the story even in times of doubt and during challenges. There were some interesting twists and surprises. It kept me invested through both books, and I read them quickly because I had to know how it was all going to work out. I  would recommend this duet to romance readers even if they are not usually paranormal fans. It was full of feels, and was unique and simply mesmerizing.

In the second of Jack & Darcy’s book, all the tension that built as Darcy learned Jack’s truth comes to a head as they must face the council in a catch-22.

When I finished It’s You #1 I knew I needed to know the rest of Jack and Darcy’s story. This second half is full of so much, between the pack politics and Darcy knowing Jack’s truth. There are a lot of things up in the air as each try to reconcile what life will look like if they stay together and also what it will look like if they live separate lives.

There is quite a bit of action and drama in this book, almost from the very beginning. Threats come in multiple shapes and forms as events unfold and alliances shift and change. All Jack wants is to keep Darcy safe, but his greatest fears may be realized if he isn’t willing to take risks with her.

Jack is such a selfless hero, to the point that as long as it protects Darcy he will go to any length. His protective instinct when it comes to Darcy knows no bounds, and at times goes into the realm of overprotective.

I loved the strength Darcy dug deep to find. She knows what she wants and there is no way to get it but to be strong and face her fears.

It is so hard to write this review with little to no spoilers of the first book. But this is a must read series, especially since I don’t read much paranormal anymore. The love these two have fostered despite 20 years of absence is amazing. The lengths they will go to to protect and love the other are immense. As I’ve said before, I don’t read much paranormal anymore, but this was such a great change of pace I am glad I went out of my comfort zone for it.

From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery comes her first duo of paranormal romances!

ONCE UPON A TIME...

the most beautiful boy in the world kissed me.
I’ve never been able to forget.
Perhaps it was his jet-black hair,
or the changing copper-color of his eyes,
the intense way he looked at me…
or the fact that he awakened my passion for the first time,
at once otherworldly yet heartbreakingly real.
But after that kiss, I never saw him again.

His name was Jack Beauloup.
Jack, my “Beautiful Wolf.”

Twenty years passed. He has returned. For me.
