She took a dare and fell in love. Truth would have been the smarter choice.

After years of living under her father’s thumb, Emmeline is ready to break free. She’s abandoned her life as a New York socialite to follow her dream of becoming a kindergarten teacher in a small, wholesome town. Seeing the man that nearly broke her was absolutely not what she had hoped to find in Prescott, Montana.

Nick hasn’t seen his Emmy in nine years, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten a thing about the woman he loves. After just one blissful night as man and wife, he gave her up, sacrificing his own happiness to keep her safe—far away from him. But the moment she walks back into his lonely life is the moment he decides never to let her go again. He won’t waste his second chance. All he has to do is win back Emmeline’s heart, keep her safe from the shadows in his past and prove to her that taking a wager on him is a sure bet.

Emmeline Austin is making big changes. She has given up her life in New York and trying to please her wealthy father and is now following her own dreams of becoming a kindergarten teacher. Her journey takes her to Prescott, Montana. She is willing to sacrifice and deal with a long distance relationship with her boyfriend to be able to teach.

But she had no clue that her new life  would bring her face to face with her husband...the man she had a whirlwind night with in Vegas nine years ago and has not seen since. Suddenly, Prescott seems much smaller than she originally thought.

And Nick Slater, the fire chief in town, decides that it is once again fate bringing Emmy back into his life. So this time, nothing is going to stop him from trying to right his wrongs and win her back...not Emmy, not her boyfriend, not her family, or even his. He is stubborn, determined, persuasive, and ready to win back her heart.  But she is resistant, hurt, guarded, untrusting, and just as strong-willed. Nick knew how to challenge and win her over years ago, and he is not going to stop until he finds a way to get another chance. But that also means explaining why he left years ago and dealing with the fall-out. And she has her own issues to deal with as well.

I loved Nick. He was alpha and bossy, but also attentive, caring, and protective. He had a vulnerability about him and was full of regret and fear. And Emmy was witty, smart, sassy, and giving. But she had her own fears and insecurities. They had great banter and chemistry. And their connection and feelings did not disappear with time and distance. But neither did all of their problems.

But even as they are figuring out where they stand and what they want to happen, there are other things going on the background. The town of  Prescott might not be such a safe reprieve as some strange occurrences and questionable situations arise. And Nick is determined to keep her safe and protected, and by his side. But it is hard to know who they should really be worried about.

This is another installment with mystery, surprises, twists, and danger. But it is also funny, sweet, sexy, emotional, second-chance love story built on a married-in-Vegas and city-girl-moves-to-the-small-town tropes. It started quick and insta-lovey, but t
heir relationship was also dynamic and basically had to be rebuilt. They had plenty of personal issues to work out and different lifestyles to merge, along with the external drama.

This is about fate, forgiveness, redemption, second chances, following dreams, priorities, and what home really means. I enjoyed getting both of their points of view and even an extra one here and there. The story line drew me in and kept me interested. The descriptions of the town and community are so vivid and the characters feel real. Devney Perry writes great challenging, complex,  likable alphas and strong heroines. I loved getting more with the characters from The Coppersmith Farmhouse: Jess, Gigi, Rowen, Silas, Maisy, Beau, Milo, Sara, and Michael. Their families were a bit more challenging, but I liked his brother, Dash. I am looking forward to more stories out of this town....bring on Silas next!

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.
