Score one for the Carolina Cold Fury hockey team as a stone-cold badass melts for a woman who makes his blood run hot.
As one of the league’s toughest enforcers, Van Turner is ruthless on the ice. He plays hard because it’s the only way to channel the rage boiling inside, and a reputation as an A-hole is better than everyone knowing the truth. Van has spent his entire life running from a secret that’s kept him from getting involved in relationships—or accepting lucrative deals with East Coast teams. Then the Carolina Cold Fury makes him an offer he can’t refuse . . . and Van meets a woman he can’t resist.
Simone Fournier is the stubborn one in her family—and that’s saying something, considering her brothers are two of the Cold Fury’s biggest stars. Simone gets what she wants, and what she wants is Van. Still, there’s a part of him Simone can’t reach, no matter how hard she tries. In private, he’s all fire and passion. In public, he freezes her out. Van may want to push her away, but Simone won’t let him go that easily. Because this time, she’s playing for keeps.
Van Turner is one of the newer Cold Fury recruits. He is Lucas's room mate so we have already seen him as a blunt, broody, closed-off man. As we get into his point of view, we see that he really is not a happy person. He purposely keeps people at arm's length, he avoids situations that put him at risk of connecting, and scares people off with his intimidating and angry facade. He has his reasons that are hidden deep and hardly anyone knows what they are.
Simone Fournier is Lucas and Max's little sister, and she has just decided that she is moving in with Lucas and Van. She is pushy, mischievous, flirty, and even dirty. She is attention-seeking and self-centered. She is a bad girl hidden under the facade of a good girl. But she has made some recent errors in judgment that have her family on her to be more responsible and figure out what she is going to do with her life. But she also loves her family and has a good heart.
Simone has decided that she wants Van. She pushes. He avoids. She challenges. He hides. Until he just can't anymore. Boom! Sex only...or that is what they claim. But even if she can get him into her bed, getting into his heart and figuring out what in his past has made him so guarded will not be an easy task. It will take earning trust, challenging him, and scaling his walls.
And if she does uncover his secrets, will she be enough to help beat back his demons and try to for something more? Or will he be sucked back into his isolated darkness and push her away?
It is told in dual points of view and that was very important especially in the beginning with Van being so quiet. I will admit that it took a bit to warm up to both Van and Simone. His attempts at self isolation made him seem like a grumpy a**. She was a bit obnoxious and would not take no for an answer. They were quite antagonistic and working against each other for a while. But I have to admit that they grew on me. I came to like Van more as his vulnerability and insecurities about his past were gradually revealed and his personality started to shine through. I could understand why he would act the way he did and his need for self preservation. And the way that Simone accepted some difficult things made me like her more. They have hot chemistry and compatibility in erotic adventures. Of course, there has to be some drama, angst, miscommunication, and heartbreak. But fortunately, Van can also bring some sweet and swoon when he wants to.
This is told during the same time period as Lucas so some situations are repeated from other points of view, and it brings back her brothers, Lucas and Max, and other Cold Fury couples. And we get to follow along with the Cold Fury as they go for the Cup again. Reed is supposed to be up next. He was in this one a bit and seems like a pretty easy-going guy, but I guess we will see.
I was gifted a copy by the author.

Van Turner is a tough competitor, but off the ice he is cold and closed off. He is Lucas Fournier’s roommate, and series readers will recognize Van from Lucas, but we didn’t learn much about him except that he keeps to himself as much as possible. When Lucas’s little sister, Simone, decides she is moving in, she also sets her sights on Van. The closed off man intrigues her, and though he gives in, he remains just as much a mystery.
Van’s quiet reserve made it hard to get to know him, even with dual point of view and chapters from his perspective. Without those chapters from his POV, he would have been even harder to like. It was only through seeing his reasons that it became possible to see him as anything other than the reserved man (at times moving into a-hole territory).
I loved watching Simone chip away at Van’s exterior. She is the perfect companion and her determination means he can’t use his usual brush off techniques. There were times her unwillingness to take no for an answer crossed lines that made it hard to like her at first. It was only as it became clear that Van wanted and needed those pushes that her single-mindedness bothered me less.
Favorite Cold Fury couples are back to support teammates and family members, especially the Fournier brothers. This book overlaps the timeline of Lucas, so some scenes are familiar, though told from different perspectives. Once again, returning to the Cold Fury world is a loosely knit family of teammates with similar outlooks but different pasts. I’m looking forward to Reed. We meet him in a few scenes of Van, and I’m looking forward to learning more about him.
I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team proves that love is a power play. As Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling series continues, the league’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.
Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.
Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett steams up the ice all over again as the Carolina Cold Fury hockey team’s hottest bad boy gets his first taste of something good.
In a league full of troublemakers, Cold Fury defenseman Roman Sýkora stands out—at least when it comes to negative publicity. Luckily he’s got an enticing distraction: a fun-loving barista who plays the ukulele and brings out a side of Roman he didn’t know he had.

As one relationship takes off, another begins: Brian seems to be clicking with Lexi’s boss at the coffee shop. Trouble is, Roman’s not ready to quit on her.

Lucas Fournier is only serious about one thing: hockey. The league’s fun-loving charmer, Luc is always up for a good prank or a great lay, and he has no intention of settling down. But being traded to the Carolina Cold Fury—and to play alongside his big brother, Max—is no joke. With another title in sight, the last thing Luc wants is to let his new teammates down. To succeed, Luc will need to keep his head in the game and the most . . . er, demanding member of his anatomy in check. But when temptation hits, Luc hits back harder.
Museum curator Stephanie Frazier has always put business before pleasure, which just about explains her nonexistent sex life. But when Stephanie meets Luc at a champagne-fueled gala, she finds herself flirting like crazy—and going home with the uninhibited athlete. For one night, she learns what passion is all about. She just never counted on the little surprise Luc leaves behind. And that’s when things really start to get . . . interesting.
