Noah - 1450

NOAH by Cristin Harber
Releases December 5, 2017

Navy SEAL Noah Coleman knows how to do two things well: underwater demolition and hand-to-hand combat. So renewing his enlistment is a no-brainer until he receives a message about his cousin’s aggressive terminal cancer. A quick trip home confirms the worst, which means his niece Bella will become his responsibility.

Elementary school guidance counselor Teagan Shaw has known Bella since her son announced the two were best friends. The shy little girl is also on Teagan’s radar because of Bella’s early signs of gifted aptitude. But Teagan is more concerned about the military man thrust into the role of single parent.

While Noah adjusts to civilian life and Eagle’s Ridge, he and Teagan begin forging a friendship. But Teagan has a secret, a shadowy figure from her past who is intent on returning to torment her.

It's a standalone contemporary romance,
but Titan readers with a keen eye might see an Easter egg.

Noah Coleman is an ex Navy SEAL who is taking on his most intimidating assignment...parenting his five year old gifted niece after her mothers death. He has given up his career, moved home, taken over a garage, and entered parenthood. He has always been strong, intelligent, focused, and good in a crisis, but now his head is spinning.

Teagan Shaw is the school counselor, but also the mother of his niece's best friend. She is there to support and guide him. But she is also attractive, smart, funny, and caring. Her history with men has made her guarded and independent.

They both feel the attraction and pull, but know it is wrong due to circumstances, obligations, and the kids. He is effectively friend-zoned. But when danger seems to start lurking in the background, his protective nature cannot be tamed. He is determined to make sure that Teagan and her son are safe. And the more time they are together, the more it is obvious that they want to be more than friends.

This is the story of two people building a new life out of broken pieces. They are bonded in loss, but now tied with their kids. And now they are seeing that they both maybe have a chance at a more fulfilling future. But first Noah has some business to take care of to make sure that their small town life remains safe.

This book is more novel length than novella, and is sweet, romantic, swoony, and a bit suspenseful. I only read this one book out of the Seven Brides for Seven Soldiers series, but it was easy to read as a stand-alone. But with that being said, I did enjoy the side characters of Adam, Ford, Ryder, Wyatt, and Zane and hearing a bit about their stories. And there was a little Titan tidbit thrown in as well. The kids, Bella and Will, were just adorable and made this a cute and fun family love story.

I was looking forward to this book as something a little different from Cristin Harber. Though Noah is a former Navy SEAL, his service couldn’t prepare him for his biggest challenge yet: raising his 5 year old niece.

I often found myself smiling as I read this, both because Noah’s reactions to his new situation were entertaining and because the whole setting was just so sweet. He is over his head, having been away for most of Bella’s life. If it weren’t for video calls, he wouldn’t know nearly as much about his niece as he does, nor would she know who he was. But now he’s needed at home, and his service commitment is up, so he’s returning home where he’s needed most. His biggest problem is that he doesn’t know what a 5 year old needs, so it’s a good thing his cousin’s best friend is available to help with the transition.

Teagan has an inside track into what Bella needs, not just because she is a mother herself, but that she is the mother of Bella’s best friend and was good friends with Bella’s mom. It’s a good thing Teagan is so willing to help, because Noah lands himself in several tight spots over the first few days. As she helps Noah and Bella settle into their new normal, she finds she likes having someone else to lean on to help with her own son as well.

There is an element of suspense and danger, as Teagan is hiding a secret from her past that is back to cause trouble. I enjoyed the added tension as she starts to realize what is going on, but also loved the opportunities is afforded Teagan and Noah to get closer.

Bella and Will are such sweet additions to the story lines. I loved the friendship they have together, and the way they lighten the mood so many times. Bella has been through a lot recently, and her resilience and brilliance keep her precocious and tenderhearted throughout. Their innocence and energy, in hindsight, added another element of fun to the storyline.

This was a departure (slightly) from Cristin’s Titan and Delta series. There is a crossover character who makes appearances as a side character, but the storyline and feel of Noah is completely different. I hadn’t fully realized that Noah would be part of a collection of stories about soldiers (mostly because Cristin is on my list of always read authors), and the references to a few other characters in the collection has me curious about their stories as well.
