This is the first book in what is bound to be a dark and twisty trilogy from Aleatha Romig.

I am not really sure yet if these two are are a match made in Heaven or Hell. She is a woman with a mysterious past who has already restarted her life over and found personal success. But now she finds herself in a situation she cannot seem to refuse. A powerful, wealthy, controlling man has her in his sights and is now ready to bring her into his life. He knows all about her past...things she has not been privy to and has always wondered about. And in order to be able to learn these things and continue with her beloved business, she will need to play nicely with this new dangerous stranger.

Sterling Sparrow grew up the heir to a rich and powerful man with dangerous ties in Chicago. And now Sterling is at the helm of both the legitimate businesses and darker ones. And now he is ready to bring in the woman he was promised years ago to be his queen. 

Unfortunately, she is not some meek and mild woman who does what she is told. And he is not one to compromise. So they definitely push and challenge each other. He is sure of what he wants and she is not sure of anything at all.

It is a layered web of secrets, lies, and omissions. It is hard to know who to trust. There are questionable and dangerous events happening around them. She is a target...but of who? And is Sterling her savior or really one of her apparent enemies?

I liked the intrigue and mystery of the past and the suspense and danger in the present. I will admit that I am still not totally connected to the characters yet. Sterling is definitely more of an anti-hero, but he can be so harsh and impenetrable that I would like to see a softer side of him. And she is sassy, fiery, and obstinate. So they are a good match and have good chemistry, but I am interested to see a more build of emotion and a connection between them as people. 

It left with an interesting cliffhanger that will be a good jumping off point for the next one. I am sure there is plenty to unravel as this trilogy continues.
