Max Kaufman was kicked out of his home as a teen and his life has been an uphill battle ever since. From addiction and living on the streets, to recovery and putting himself through nursing school, he’s spent the last ten years rebuilding his shattered sense of self. Now he’s taken a job as a private caretaker to Edward Marsh III, the president and CEO of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Max soon learns Marsh’s multi-billion-dollar empire is a gold and diamond-encrusted web of secrets and lies.
The longer Max works and lives with the Marsh family, the tighter the secrets tangle around him. And his heart—that he’s worked so hard to protect—falls straight into the hands of the distant, cold, and beautiful son of a dynasty…
Silas Marsh is set to inherit the family fortune, but his father is determined his heir be the “perfect” son. Before Silas can take over the company and end its shady business practices, he must prove himself worthy…and deny his true nature. Silas must choose: stand up to his father by being true to himself and his undeniable feelings for Max. Or pretend to be someone he is not in order to inherit everything. Even if it means sacrificing a chance at happiness and real love.
This is a story about two broken men who have both faced discrimination from their families for who they are and have suffered years of repercussions because of it.
Max Kaufman was kicked out of his family and traversed a long road of homelessness and addiction until one person made a difference in his life. He is now recovering and a nurse. He is caring, focused, honest, and has a big heart.
Silas Marsh is the next in line to a pharmaceutical empire...if his ailing but still controlling father ever gives up control to him. But there is such pain in his past and in their history that has marked him and made him ignore true parts of himself. He has also been touched by addiction and is in recovery. He is guarded, distant, disciplined, intelligent, talented, bitter, and hiding so many secrets.
They are two men who sound very different even though they share some similar problems but find a connection they never expected. As they try to be friends and flirt with temptation, they are playing with fire as their worlds are closely tied and their secrets could cost them.
I liked both of the characters and could feel their connection, conflict, and fear. I also adored his autistic brother, Eddie who literally stole every scene he was in. But I have to admit that this is kind of a long book and it took me a while to read it. Not sure if it was just me or some of the painful subject matter, but also some of it seemed a bit repetitive especially in the middle. But part of that is that there was a lot of personal confusion and back and forth with the characters especially Silas. There were plenty of challenges in the present both personally and with the business as well as dealing with the pain of the past and uncertainty of the future. But I was really invested in the last part and how everything would shake out in the end.
It's a story of survival, setbacks, trust, hope, and finding a life worth living. It is emotional, raw, angsty, and powerful. These two have grappled for self-acceptance, family approval, and to be true to themselves in an environment that has not been supportive. It is a complex journey of healing, redemption, accepting love, and learning to truly live versus just survive.
Added note: I did not read Forever Right Now that is about Max's friend, Darlene, but ones who have will enjoy cameos.
