A Standalone Contemporary Romance

Terminated for inappropriate behavior.

I couldn’t believe the letter in my hands.

Nine years. Nine damn years I’d worked my butt off for one of the largest companies in America, and I was fired with a form letter when I returned home from a week in Aruba.

All because of a video taken when I was on vacation with my friends—a private video made on my private time. Or so I thought…

Pissed off, I cracked open a bottle of wine and wrote my own letter to the gazillionaire CEO telling him what I thought of his company and its practices.

I didn’t think he’d actually respond.

I certainly never thought I’d suddenly become pen pals with the rich jerk.

Eventually, he realized I’d been wronged and made sure I got my job back.

Only…it wasn’t the only thing Grant Lexington wanted to do for me.

But there was no way I was getting involved with my boss’s boss’s boss. Even if he was ridiculously gorgeous, confident, and charming.

It would be completely wrong, inappropriate even.

Sort of like the video that got me into trouble to begin with.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

But sometimes it’s twice as fun.

This is a snappy and fun workplace romance with a twist, but it is also an emotional story of forgiveness and healing.

On-air reporter Ireland St. James is shocked to find out that she is being terminated due to a private short social media video while on vacation. Her response might be bit risky but eventually leads to some positive things. But now she is on the radar of her boss's boss, Grant Lexington.

He is the CEO of finance of the company that owns her news station. And Ireland's emails and circumstances intrigued him. Next thing he knows he is trying to date her, even though he has sworn off relationships. He knows it could be seen as inappropriate, but there is just something about the smart, savvy, and beautiful Ireland that he cannot seem to forget. And he is charismatic, confident, and persistent.

But there is more to both of their stories and history that has affected them. They both have some trust and other issues to deal with.

There is an underlying mystery as we get some flashbacks to his past, while also getting present-day points of view of both Ireland and Grant. I loved their witty rapport, and they definitely had sexual tension and chemistry. They pushed and challenged each other. They both were scared of their attraction and attachment. I liked that they took the time to actually learn about and try to know the other person. But Grant's secrets were deep and painful and have kept him living in limbo for years.

Will Ireland be the one to finally break through Grant's defenses in order to try a real relationship? Or will she end up heartbroken?

This book had so many layers. The characters had such depth in their backstories and their personalities. I really loved these two together. The side characters were also interesting and were important both for the plot and some comic relief. I was full of tension and my heart hurt as I could tell his story that was gradually revealed was going to be powerful...and it was.

This is so much more than a sexy rom-com or a workplace romance. While there is fun, flirting, and steamy moments, there are also sad, heartfelt, difficult, and emotional times. But ultimately it is about forgiveness, trust, moving on, and living life to the fullest. I was pulled in from the beginning and did not want to put it down until I was done. And I am left feeling like I took an emotional journey with these characters, but also had a lot of fun along the way as well.
This quickly moved to the top of my list of favorite Vi Keeland books as I was thoroughly entertained by these two. I found myself grinning at Ireland’s spark and natural fire as Gabe pursues her with a curiosity long forgotten.

Ireland is furious at having lost her hard earned job because of a photo taken while on vacation and posted on a private social media profile. Fueled by exhaustion and alcohol, she pens a scathing email to the head of the media company. In the morning, she regrets so many of those decisions and just wants her job back, nothing a little groveling might not have solved, without the addition that late night email to her boss’s boss’s boss.

Gabe is intrigued by Ireland. He has tended to stay out of the media side of the business, but she gives him a good reason to start checking out what is going on in that building. But because he does have a position of power in the company he has to tread carefully to learn more about this woman who has piqued his interest.

They each have interesting backstories that are impacting them in different ways. Ireland has accepted much of her past, choosing to grow from her adversity rather than be defined by it. Gabe accepts parts of his past, but has some major baggage keeping him from moving on. As his history is revealed I came to feel even more sympathy for him and had a new understanding for some of his behaviors and attitudes towards relationships.

I loved how this combined workplace romance with a deeper emotional journey. Even as the story was diving to some pretty deep emotional points, I also felt like there was a lot of fun to their journey, and it left me feeling refreshed after a bit of a reading slump.
