From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men series comes an irresistible and suspenseful romance between a tough Texas Ranger and his first love--a woman in danger who insists she doesn't need his protection.

Hill Gamble is a model lawman: cool and collected, with a confident swagger to boot. Too bad all that Texas charm hasn't gotten him anywhere in his personal life, especially since the only girl he ever loved has always been off-limits. But then Hill is assigned to investigate her father's mysterious death, and he's forced back to the town--and the woman--he left behind.

When Hill left Loveless, he broke Kody Lawton's already battered heart. And now that he's working on her father's case, avoiding him is impossible. She can handle Hill and her unwanted feelings--until he puts his life on the line to protect her. Suddenly, Kody realizes that Hill could be taken away from her...for good.

Includes the bonus novella Cowboy to the Rescue by A.J. Pine!

I knew there was a lot of history with Kody Lawton and Hill Gamble based upon their interactions in the last book, but I was not prepared for the depth of their pain.

Kody Lawton is the fiery, impulsive little sister of Case and Crew. She is now a bar owner and keeps some questionable company. But her past is filled with pain, abandonment, and chaos. She once was really close both to Hill and his younger brother, Aaron. Hill was the more untouchable, reserved, good guy that was going places. Aaron was more wild and free like herself so they gravitated towards each other. But there is a lot more to that story that has left lasting effects on both Hill and Kody.

Hill always had a soft spot for Kody, but eventually felt he needed to distance himself. But he now lives with regret. He got out of Loveless and is now a Texas Ranger, but he has always had unresolved feelings for her.

Now in the midst of a murder investigation, they are spending time together. And things are heating up and old feelings are being stirred. They have strong reactions to each other and make each other feel whether it be good or bad. But Kody has such fear of being hurt or left again and froze up her heart years ago. And Hill is supposed to be impartial and do his job without distractions. And there might be a stigma of them even trying to be together based on the past.

These two have survived so much throughout their lives, is it finally their chance to find a bit of happiness?

This is a slow burn, yet sometimes volatile and steamy, second-chance love story built on a mystery and murder. But it is also about healing and moving on from emotionally challenging pasts and pain. I have to admit some parts seemed to drag a bit for me, and some things seemed a bit over the top. But I liked how Hill and Kody balanced each other.

Her brothers and their significant others return as well as one local outlaw. And there is a new character that brings some more drama. We get some closure, but not all of it. I am looking forward to more in this series and concluding part of the story arc in the next book.
Kody Lawton is the fiery younger sister of the Lawton brothers we’ve already fallen in love with. She is impulsive and a little reckless, running her bar with a little help from some not so law abiding friends.

Hill Gamble has stayed away from Loveless, but a murder investigation in town brings him back as part of the Texas Ranger team looking into the death. It doesn’t hurt that he has history with the murdered man’s daughter, Kody.

This was a slow burn. Hill and Kody have history, but their history is also tangled up with Hill’s brother, Aaron, and Aaron’s story ended in a tragedy that neither has really moved past. My heart hurt learning what had scarred both of them so severely, and it made sense why both were hesitant to let the other back in until they address it.

I would also say the plot focused more on the investigation around them and Kody’s bar drama rather than the actual relationship between them. It was clear pretty quickly that there was chemistry between them, but it often took a backseat to other aspects of the story.

This was a great moving on of the series arc, and I am left with questions that have me anticipating the next book in the series. Questions that can only really be answered once a particular (rather surprising) character resurfaces.

Our reviews

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men series comes a captivating novella about a rugged rodeo star who will do anything to protect the people he loves.

When rodeo star Crew Lawton loses everything in a bad bet, he has no choice but to take a new job to pay off his debts – even if it means becoming the face of an expensive male skincare line. Crew is used to getting sweaty and rustling in the dirt, not posing for photo shoots. And he’s certainly not used to being bossed around by a woman who doesn’t even know the difference between bulls and broncs. But Crew owes money to dangerous criminals, and he’ll do anything Della says in order to pay them back and keep them far away from his family in Loveless, Texas…

The launch of her new men’s line for her family’s company means everything to Della Deveaux, and she’s not willing to let some rugged, arrogant cowboy ruin her campaign. Crew Lawton is the last man she would have chosen to represent her chic, sophisticated brand. Unfortunately, her father already invested millions in Crew’s stupidly handsome face. Yet the more time they spend together, Della and Crew realize that opposites do attract. But when the time comes for Crew to face his past mistakes, will he be able to protect his family…and the woman he’s come to love?

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men series comes an irresistible and suspenseful romance between a doctor who plays by the rules and the outlaw who breaks them in order to protect her.

Dr. Presley Baskin has always lived a quiet, calm life. Unfortunately, nothing about her life in Loveless, Texas---especially not the wild, rowdy, and impossibly close-knit Lawton family who've claimed her---is quiet or calm. Which is how loner Presley finds herself roped into patching up local bad boy Shot Caldwell against her better judgment. Presley wants nothing to do with the dangerous, brooding leader of the local outlaw motorcycle club. But when someone starts stalking her, Shot is the only person she trusts to help. Plus he owes her one...

Palmer 'Shot' Caldwell has always known his life isn't made for relationships. At least until shy, secretive, Presley reluctantly pulled a bullet out of him. He's oddly protective of the pretty doctor, so when she comes to him for help, hard-hearted Shot suddenly realizes there's nothing he wouldn't do to keep her safe.
