REVIEW: Black Tangled Heart by Samantha Young
Black Tangled Heart is a complete standalone. The Play On series are books connected by the theme of the arts industry, not by characters, and can be read in any order.
To my siblings, Jane was a friend. A pseudo-sister, the girl we grew up with.
To me? She was everything.
Our passion consumed us.
When our world fell apart, I thought our love would be the thing that held us together.
She was the love of my life. But she abandoned me when I needed her most.
And I'll never forgive her.
For years I've been planning my revenge against the people who took everything from me.
Jane won't be an exception. I'm coming for her.
She knows it.
She says she wants to help me serve my version of justice on the people who hurt me.
I'll let her.
She probably thinks it will save her from me.
It won't.
I haven't been able to stop thinking about Jamie and Jane and their play on my mental/emotional health. I wasn't sure what to rate this book seeing as I had a STRONG love/hate relationship with it.
Jamie and Jane were so consuming. The first half of the book I was so wrapped up in their love. The connection. Their friendship. It was awe inspiring. A love for the ages, one that makes those around them envious. I couldn't get enough of them. This half was a strong 6 stars for me.
Then the second half of the book came and the whole tone changed. We went from breathtaking to wrathful. The once loving and passionate relationship Jamie and Jane had turned in to some hard core loathing. This change in pace left me with some serious whiplash. Although, I totally get why it happened. Circumstances and tragedy struck and the fallout was less than ideal.
This is where my hatred came in. This section held one of my biggest pet peeves within a book. I'm going to place a spoiler tag, please don't read if you don't want to know any part of the book. Please see hidden spoiler HERE on my Goodreads review.
Outside of this, I FLOVED Jamie. His love, attention, and devotion knew no bounds. He was so damn sweet, until he wasn't. His wrath was just as fierce as everything else.
When Jamie and Jane were good, they were oh so good. Whether that was being in love with each other, or antagonizing each other. Their sparks flew in both situations. Their chemistry sparked some serious fire. It was so damn hot it kept me up all night devouring their every interaction. That's why I've decided to give this book 4. 5 stars, when normally it would automatically become a 1-2 star read. The fact that I can't stop thinking about it also played a factor into that rating.
My only other issue was with the bonus chapters that you can access through subscribing to Ms. Young's newsletter. Those chapters should have been in the book. They gave so much more insight at the end. Plus, they took a turbulent second half and gave us so much delicious goodness, it eased the pain and ansty frustration.
