REVIEW: Unloved by Katy Regnery

The sins of the father. The burden of the son.

My name is Cassidy Porter…

My father, Paul Isaac Porter, was executed twenty years ago for the brutal murder of twelve innocent girls.

Though I was only eight-years-old at the time, I am aware – every day of my life – that I am his child, his only son.

To protect the world from the poison in my veins, I live a quiet life, off the grid, away from humanity.

I promised myself, and my mother, not to infect innocent lives with the darkness that swirls within me, waiting to make itself known.

It’s a promise I would have kept…if Brynn Cadogan hadn’t stumbled into my life.

Now I exist between heaven and hell: falling for a woman who wants to love me, while all along reminding myself that I must remain…

Unloved.

Katy did it again. I truly am in love with this author's writing.

Unloved was a unique story, at least to me. I was intrigued by the whole serial rapist/killer father and whether or not Cass carried those same genetics. I knew going in it was a heavier book but didn't know what route the story would take. Was our hero going to be a antihero or a swoon worthy book boyfriend (not that the anti-ones can't be those)?

Any who, we learn rather quickly Cassidy and his mother feared his genetics and because of that he lived as a recluse for many, many years off the grid. From the age of 9, he only had his mom and grandfather and they brought him up to believe if he just stayed away from society that he would never have the urge to hurt anyone. So that's exactly what he did; even after they passed away, he continued to live a solitary life.

Until Brynn came along and needed rescuing. Instinct took over and Cass saved the day, nursing her back to health. Adjusting to her being in his space 24/7. Their dynamic was alluring, especially since we had a reversal of roles. Cassidy was the shy, 27 year old virgin and Brynn, a few years older than him, was the initiator. Our girl knew what she wanted and wasn't shy about going after it. I absolutely LOVED this. One of my favorite things about this author, so far as I've only read a few of her books, is her heroines aren't doormats. Brynn kicked ass. No doormat here. She didn't hesitate to pursue her man, even after he explicitly told her they could never be. I'm so glad she didn't give up on him.

Again, Katy wrote the perfect heroine for our hero.

*sigh*

I do have to be honest, though, this was one of those stories that hit me in the feels when I least expected it. I found myself emotional without even realizing how connected to these two I truly was. They snuck up on me. I was just moseying along, enjoying the connection between the MCs; thinking while I adore Cass and Brynn they didn't have the same potency as Cody and Juliet (making me miss them). Boy was I wrong. Oh so wrong. They most certainly did. It was just a different type of vitality. A slower burn.

Unloved took a turn for me at that point. It went from being the psychological/serial killer aspect that captivated me to the romance captivating me. It was then I hoped whatever Cassidy was biologically ingrained with he would overcome to find his HEA.

Another couple I would highly recommend spending time with.
