Summer nights and star-crossed lovers! From USA Today bestselling author Sarina Bowen.

Once upon a time, he gave me a summer of friendship, followed by one perfect night. We shared a lot during our short time together. But he skipped a few crucial details.

I didn’t know he was a rock star.

I didn’t know his real name.

Neither of us knew I’d get pregnant.

And I sure never expected to see him again.

Five years later, his tour bus pulls up in Nest Lake, Maine. My little world is about to be shattered by loud music and the pounding of my own foolish heart.

Jonas Smith is returning to Nest Lake, Maine where he spent a memorable summer with an unforgettable girl and was inspired to write his band's most popular hits. Kira was his summer friend and on the last night, it was more. He wanted to just be himself that summer and did not disclose his full identity or the fact he is the lead singer of the group Hush Note. And then he left to return to band life

Kira tried to get in touch with him once but gave up when she never heard back. So by the time she got some unexpected news and figured out who he really was, she was too hurt and nervous to keep chasing him.

But now that he has returned five years later in need of relaxation and a reconnection to that past, he will fully realize the consequences of his actions. Seeing Kira again is an unexpected but happy surprise and shock, but her news is even more so.

She was the girl that he let get away but never forgot. She is every lyric in all his love songs. And now he will have to make a choice and figure out how to proceed to not lose his second chance. And Kira is smart and strong, but also anxious and wary.

He has broken her trust and her heart before. They live different lives in different locations. She has family obligations and ties. And he spends his time on the open road with temptations and lives in the spotlight.  Both of their lives are complicated and do not easily mesh. But I really liked Jonas and his attitude about the whole thing. He is a swoon-worthy hero and makes quick decisions. And Kira is such a caring and loving person that just wants to be happy herself, but also feels the need to make sure those around her are cared for

Can true love win this time and can they find a way to make it work?

This is a sweet, low angst, friends-to-lovers, rockstar, second-chance love story.  It introduces the band Hush Note including the girl drummer, Quinn, and troubled lead guitarist, Nixon. I am looking forward to their stories in Rifts and Refrains by Devney Perry and Muses and Melodies by Rebecca Yarros. But I have to say, both of these characters seem to have some issues and some work to do on themselves. I also loved her brother, Adam, and the band manager, Ethan, and sweet Vivi is just a joy. I hope we see more of them in the series as well.
Jonas Smith remembers Nest Lake, Maine as the place he found a friend, and a summer of peace. Five years later he has a short trip planned with his band to go back to that place that recharged him so well. He is also hoping that friend he made is happy, and maybe he’ll see her for a moment while he’s there. He spent one night with her all those years ago, and didn’t tell her who he really was, but part of him has never forgotten the girl or the love.

Kira was heartbroken when he left and didn’t answer her letter, but she had to continue living her life, especially after she learned she was pregnant. Moving on meant moving in with her brother in Boston and slowly continuing her degree. She is not finished with that degree yet, but she has a beautiful, spunky 4 year old daughter who brings out a light in those around her. Kira didn’t mean to keep their child a secret, but after a few attempts to get ahold of him, she decided they were fine without him, never expecting he would reappear in Nest Lake.

I loved Jonas. He is under a lot of pressure to hold his band together. His bandmates both have issues they are hiding that causes more tension than they’ve ever experienced.

Kira frustrated me at times, but by the end I was fully on her side. My biggest frustration was with the way she tried to get in touch with Jonas when she found out she was pregnant. She tried a few things, but it didn’t feel like she went to a whole lot of effort to get in touch.

When the secrets come out, there is still a lot to sort through, including how Jonas will handle things now that he knows he has a family out there.

As the beginning of a series, this book only vaguely introduces many of the side characters, leaving Jonas’s bandmates a bit of a mystery - perfectly setting up their own upcoming books. But the side character who nailed it for me is Adam. Kira’s brother is one of my favorite characters in the whole book. His support, understanding, and ability to be a sounding board were exactly what Kira needed throughout this journey.

I am looking forward to seeing what secrets the other band members are hiding. I can’t say I liked Quinn in this book, though I’m sure we are not supposed to like her here, but I am also curious about her story. Nix has his own hidden demons and though he is a mess here, I can’t help but have a soft spot for him.
