Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?

Can you get anymore cliche? I’d heard that damn phrase my entire life.

Most of the time, it was when a woman was mid-orgasm—or, when I was about to take someone’s life.

You see, we all have our demons.

Apparently, my name was mine. Though it didn’t help me get my answers any faster.

I nodded when I was supposed to.

I smirked when I needed to.

I complimented when the timing was right.

Then… I’d send them to hell after giving them nothing but heaven.

I should’ve felt guilt.

I didn’t.

Because I was good at what I did.

Making people believe what I wanted them to was an art I perfected. In a world where nothing mattered but staying at the top, I made sure no one slipped through my fingers.

Except for her.

She was gorgeous.

One might say she was the female version of me.

I lost her once.

I wouldn’t lose twice.

Now was the time…

To let the games begin.

MAFIA CASANOVA: Full length Standalone Romantic Suspense Novel

Romeo Sinacore is a man in an impossible situation. He is supposed to be the mercenary of the family and have no heart. But it is a toss up whether he does or not. He acts cold and calculating and can complete horrific acts of violence, but something in his chest beats for Eden De Rossi and always has. She was his best friend and the only woman to challenge and push him. But she is also forbidden and his brother also wants her. And despite Romeo's cold facade, he wants his brother to be happy and knows he will never be allowed to have Eden for himself so he pushes her towards him. He tries not to let it show how it tortures him since he is supposed to be a soulless sinner that follows orders.

Eden has always loved and wanted Romeo, but he always pushes her away and intentionally hurts her to do so. She cares for his brother, Tristian, but it is different. But she has to make her choice based upon what she knows, even if she comes to regret it. He stays away intermittently, and the times when he does reappear it brings out her pain, rage, and unresolved feelings.

But when the unthinkable happens and she is in jeopardy, it will be Romeo tasked with her protection. And that opens up a whole other can of worms with them living in close quarters and circumstances changing.

This is a passionate, intense, raw, hardcore mafia love story about soul mates and family obligations. One choice can have a ripple effect that could ruin lives and change all the rules. Secrets, lies, betrayals are not to be tolerated. The families are protective and anyone against them or that betrays them better watch their back.

Even though Romeo was blunt, unapologetic, cruel, and violent, I liked him. I could feel the intense feelings he had for Eden. My heart broke for him and his circumstances. And Eden was strong and feisty, but could be hurt so easily by his resistance. But she was also not afraid of him. Their lives were full of complications and sacrifices. They were passionate and volatile together, and no matter how much he tried to break their connection or stay away, it just sizzled in between them like some unstoppable force.

Is Romeo the hero or is he the villain? Does he deserve to have what he longs for or is he doomed to be alone and do the family's dirty work? When all the secrets are revealed, will there finally be a chance for happiness or will it be the final nail in their coffin?

I have loved all of RVD's mafia stories, but have not read any of M. Robinon's. The authors' writing styles flowed well together and even though there were some cameos from other books, it stands alone. This one had some twists and surprises. I will admit I had figured out some of them ahead of time. But it was full of tension, drama, and angst both past and present. The flipping back and forth with flashbacks sometimes took me out of the story since just as we were starting to get somewhere, it would flip back and require me to reorient. But there was a lot of story and history to tell, so I understood why they did it. I was rooting for the anti-hero the whole time, but I will admit that towards the end it seemed a bit rushed especially with his changing mindset. But I enjoyed it and although it tied up Romeo's storyline well, it left it open for a secondary character to have their own book next and I will definitely read it.
Romeo Sinacore is something else! He pushed the love of his life and best friend into the arms of his brother because he would never be good enough for Eden, and Tristan’s life would be safer for her. He is cold, calculating, and a ruthless killer when his family needs it. His darkness would tarnish Eden’s goodness, so he does what he must to protect her from himself.

Eden always loved Romeo, but when he turns his cruelness towards her, she relents and turns to his brother for her future. She loves Tristan in his own way, though never as deeply as the love she had for Romeo. But when her life is threatened, Romeo is the one the family puts in charge of her protection and she must face the feelings she’s been fighting for so many years.

The push and pull between these two was incredible. Romeo stayed away for most of her marriage because it was too much for both of them. But he always watched from the edges, making sure they were safe and happy. When he has to step in to protect her, there is nothing he won’t do to keep her safe, even if she hates him now. He is the perfect anti-hero -- selfish and hurtful when he needs to be, but he realizes that the cruelty is partly a front to hide the pain of keeping Eden at arm's length. Even as he protects her, his decisions are not always good ones, and even when he is in protector mode, there is pain.

This is the first of M. Robinson’s books I’ve read, though I’ve read most of Rachel Van Dyken’s. I liked the way the entire story came together, but found myself having to flip back to chapter headings to regain my bearings about the timeline. There is a lot of flipping between the past and present, and as such I sometimes felt like I wanted more details about a particular storyline that seemed to get lost in the time jumps.

The characters that were introduced were compelling and interesting. Some cameo’s from RVD’s series appear (and if there are cameos from any of Robinson’s books, I wouldn’t recognize them as such), but this book stands alone entirely with only vague mentions of the five families from the Elite world. The final lines tease an upcoming story for a side character, and from one simple line I was hooked and can’t wait to read what will happen next.
