Life's Too Short meets The Unhoneymooners in this sparkling, steamy, and swoon-worthy novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken, in which two sworn enemies must share house, home--and maybe their hearts--when they become co-parents after a sudden loss.
Colby's living her best life: as a popular food blogger, she gets to fulfill her dreams of exploring the globe. But her world comes crashing down when a tragic accident leaves her co-guardian of her best friend's two adorable children. Not only does she need to put down roots--fast--but she'll be sharing custody with the one man she can't stand sharing a continent with, let alone a house.
Accountant-extraordinaire Rip values rules and plans. But when he loses his sister and his best friend and becomes an insta-guardian all in one night, Rip sees his organized life imploding. What he really doesn't need is his sister's irresponsible, flighty--albeit kind and gorgeous--best friend making it worse.
Rip doesn't trust Colby to take their new responsibilities seriously, while Colby can't believe Rip thinks children will thrive under his rigid control. Yet soon Rip and Colby discover they need each other more than they hate each other. Could it be possible that following their hearts is just what their new little family needs?
Complete opposites who make each other absolutely crazy are now roommates and taking care of two precocious kids.
Colby and Rip have been at odds for years with an undercurrent of repressed sexual tension, but when they are forced to function as a family unit, the differences become even more apparent.
Colby has always been a free spirit and her job of travel blogging allowed her to be nomadic and enjoy life. Rip is a perfectionist accountant who likes order and control. He is a fixer and his lack of ability to fix the situation they are in just makes him angry and more judgmental. While the disorder at home just makes her feel like a hot mess and failure. Each thinks the other has it easier so that just adds to the resentment.
It all seems like too much...and then it is. These two are overwhelmed, out of their element, at each other's throats while also not-so-secretly crushing on each other but hiding it the best they can. Sharp tongues. Heated looks. Unresolved emotions. Forced proximity. Sexual tension. A house in chaos and disarray. Grumpy vs. sunshine on a domestic battleground with little training and uncontrollable recruits.
What else can possibly go wrong... or maybe right?
What else can possibly go wrong... or maybe right?
This is a realistic portrayal of parenthood while trying to also have a career and dealing with interpersonal relationships. It's messy, chaotic, stressful, but it can also be life-changing and rewarding. Life is not perfect and sometimes the unexpected can change everything in bad and in good ways.
"One thing I had already learned was that you had to hold on to the moments-- even the ones that drove you crazy. Because you never knew how long you had to enjoy them."
I loved seeing deeper into Rip and Colby's issues and true feelings, and was rooting for them to figure out what side of the love or hate line they really land on. I enjoyed his co-worker, Banks, and how he inserted himself in trying to lead them in the right direction. This book balanced out the sad parts with sarcasm, fun, passion, and real emotion.

Colby loves her fast paced life: traveling, eating fantastic food, and then blogging about her experiences is everything she wants for now. She doesn’t keep roots except for her best friend, Monica, and her kids. Monica’s family is important to her, except for Monica’s brother, who is Colby’s polar opposite. One failed date and the two can’t even be in the same room without throwing barbs at the other.
Rip lives a tightly ordered life. He likes plans and preparations and his accounting firm fits neatly within those requirements. When an accident claims the lives of both his best friend and his sister, Rip finds himself responsible for his nephew and niece, and forced to partner with his sister’s flighty best friend.
In her eyes, Rip is rigid and a stick-in-the-mud. In his eyes, Colby is irresponsible and unreliable, in addition to just generally being a mess. Monica always thought they’d be great together but the one time they went on a date ended in disaster.Their absolute opposite characteristics had each thinking the other’s style was going to ruin the children (or was something they could never see themselves matched with). The forced proximity makes them put their thoughts about the other on hold as they figured out how to be parents together. It also helped them see the strengths of the other (even as they questioned their own weaknesses).
This was full of very emotional moments as well as some great comic relief from the kids and Banks. It was definitely an emotional punch when their loss happened (even though it was clearly coming), and those early scenes where everyone was hurting were so well written I was in those scenes with the characters. The chaos and calamity of trying to raise young children was obvious and highlighted their differences. I loved the development of their co-parenting relationship, but felt like the romantic piece was not as natural. I struggled a little bit with the speed at which it seemed Rip and Colby went from furious adversaries to romantically involved, but also knowing they were not strangers made it work a little better.
The side characters added a lot of fun to this story. Banks is a hoot and I would not mind one bit if he got his own story someday. The kids added a fun chaos to the plot as Rip and Colby navigated their own grief while learning how to be parents.
