Review Tour: The Game: Vi Keeland
The Game
It started out like any other Tuesday.
I spent twelve hours writing algorithms for one of the largest companies in the world and then came home to work on a pet project of mine—feeding facts about the men I knew into a formula to find my perfect match before my twenties came barreling to a close.
But then a man knocked on my door and handed me some papers that turned my life upside down.
Apparently, a father I never knew existed had left me something in his will. That something turned out to be part ownership in a professional football team.
Next thing I knew, I was learning a sport I knew nothing about by spending time with the team’s quarterback who was out with an injury, a man who my formula would definitely determine was all wrong for me.
Christian Knox was too handsome and confident for his own good and could have any woman he wanted. Only lately the only woman he seemed to want was me.
But there was no way I was getting involved when I was now his boss, even if he was insanely gorgeous and had the dirtiest mouth I’d ever come across.
It would be wrong, wouldn’t it?
Probably. But you know what they say about things that are wrong...sometimes they feel so right.
Bella Keating's life has been in flux for two years since she inherited a pro football team from a man she never knew. But now she is coming in and trying to learn and embrace her new Lady Boss status. But she is also an awkward math geek who plays better with numbers than people.
Christian Knox is the star quarterback and team captain. He is flirty, cocky, and charming, and sets his sights on her right away. He does not seem to care how much she blocks his advances but he is still willing to keep trying.
This is a witty, sexy, heartwarming, player/team owner, charmer/math geek, secret affair story, but there is also some mystery layered in the background that is slowly unraveled. I adored Christian. He seems like he should be a player. but really he has a heart of gold and knows what he wants. He kind of just barrels his way into her life but also wants to be the man to help and support her. She is definitely more reserved and cautious, but their dynamic is fun to watch and they have amazing chemistry. I liked seeing her begin to feel more comfortable in her new life. She has trust issues and a history of loss. But he is determined to show her he is worth the risk. But she is well aware that life can often be unpredictable.
I loved some of the side characters and hated a few others. I was sucked into this book and read it in an afternoon.
Bella Keating found herself thrust into a role she never imagined after learning the father she never knew had left her a football team in his will. She is a computer analyst, used to working with code and numbers rather than people and she has a lot to learn about running a football team. As she navigates her new responsibilities and the changes in her lifestyle, she finds herself leaning on the team quarterback to learn the people involved in her new job.
Christian Knox is the quarterback and team captain, and though his outgoing, confident nature has him at the front of many events, there is something else behind his willingness to help the new team owner get settled into her role.
I loved these two together. While there was immediate attraction, there was also hesitation because Bella wanted to be accepted and respected in her role - something she felt would be jeopardized if she started something with Christian. But Christian wasn’t worried about what others would say and was pretty determined to give them a shot. Bella has a hard time letting people in due to her past, so it will take all of Christian’s determination to let her walls down completely. I was not terribly surprised by the revelations that led to the final conflicts between Christian and Bella, but loved watching the way they worked through the revelations and the strength of character they each showed.
This was an entertaining, relatively quick read. Once I was hooked on the characters I didn’t want to put the story down. There were great side characters - some that offered fantastic support to Bella in all the struggles she had faced, while others made this feel a little like a Cinderella story complete with evil stepsisters.
