Heavy is the head that inherits the crown.

The only thing on Daire Archer’s mind when she pulled a disappearing act on Christmas was proving she was worthy of being her father's daughter. She was born an Archer, which was a blessing and a curse, and Daire was determined to show everyone she deserved to carry the legacy that came with her name.

There is power in a name, and being an Archer meant Daire needed to do better, to be better. At least, that’s what she thought she needed, until a boy from nowhere—with a name that meant nothing—showed her that she was already pretty great just the way she was.

Campbell has always rejected everything concerning his maniacal father and his troubled past. When he left Nowhere, he was certain he wanted a nice, quiet life free from the only things he'd ever known: violence and bloodshed. He thought he needed to be a better man. He wondered if there was a kinder, gentler version of himself under his thick armor of scars and tattoos.

It wasn't until he started chasing Daire Archer all over hell and back that Campbell realized he needed to be a man who was better at being bad than everyone else in his troubled world.

Because now, he had a problematic princess to protect. One with an uncanny ability for finding trouble. Where Daire is concerned, being a good guy isn't necessary.

She keeps telling him that he's pretty great, no matter what he’s done.

This is the story of two people from opposite backgrounds that couldn’t be more lost. They’re both looking to figure out what they want to do with their lives while also dealing with effects of trauma they’ve been through and lack of self-worth. She is running and he is looking for a place to belong.

The Archers are shocked when their little princess Daire runs away on Christmas Eve. No one has realized what she has been going through since she and her brother had been in an accident. Uncle Benny sends his protege Campbell to get her. Campbell has recently been the new nanny for her friends and they did not get along at all, but at least he shows up and is willing to listen. He comes from a rough background and has skills enough to keep her safe. So why not take a bit of a travel adventure before returning?

Daire is seen as a pretty, pampered, impulsive, reckless, strong-willed, and stubborn girl. But no one has looked deeper to see the guilt, feelings of failure, and self-loathing that she has been feeling. Campbell is prickly, brutally honest, mysterious, and incredibly loyal and protective. He comes from a bad place and has done bad things, but he’s also trying to make a new life.

As these two travel together, they start to face their demons together as well. And along the way, they’re becoming more vulnerable and trusting each other more. But not everybody is going to be happy about them even thinking about being together.

This brings back a lot of cameos from the Marked Men and The Point and The Breaking Point series and some others. There are so many little ties and connections and some surprises. But it’s really more about a girl that looks like she has everything in life but she’s really looking for her own way, healing,  and purpose. And a boy who’s not afraid to chase her, protect her, and stand beside her in whatever way she needs. And she’s also willing to stand up for and beside him as well. And they might have to fight for what they want and what they need, but they find the strength together to want to do that.

This is an antagonistic, hurt-comfort, opposites-attract, anti-hero and the former good girl, finding-love-on-the-run romance about healing and personal growth. The family ties run deep in good and bad ways and have a strong effect on these two. I honestly was a bit angry with some of the side characters that I have previously loved.  I really liked Daire and Campbell together and how they challenge and balance each other. This is really an eye-opening journey of self-discovery for both of them. I am looking forward to Zowen and Aston next.
I have been waiting patiently for this book since Fortunate Son when we really started to get to know Daire. She has a lot going on and a lot to figure out as she navigates her early adulthood as an Archer.

Daire Archer has always felt like she wasn’t held accountable for her actions, that her family made excuses for her and let her get by too easily. She is a little listless as she isn’t sure what she wants to do as an adult. After her brother’s accident, she has felt increasing guilt at the circumstances that caused him to have to change his dreams. As Christmas approaches, she decides the only thing she can do is run away to find herself.

Campbell might have an in with the Archer, having helped Hyde and Remy with their baby, but he is still an outsider with some pretty scary connections. When Daire goes missing, a family friend sends him to go find her. But what should have been a quick find and return trip, turned into a multiday, multi state road trip as Cambell has to jump to help his sister as well.

I loved the way these two were around each other from the beginning. From a shaky trust built via tracking devices and unexpected connections, these two built an attraction that started from a bit of animosity. But as they find more connections and similarities, they begin to each let down their walls a little bit.

My favorite parts of this book were the ones where Marked Men and The Point really crossed over, with some perfect cameos and support from old friends. I loved the way the author carefully crafted connections between the families (blood and found) of Campbell and Daire. Each time a new connection was revealed and the characters joined the story, I reveled in the new information and the return of a previous favorite character. This story perfectly tied two of Crownover’s worlds together in a way that made absolute sense for both worlds.

Ry Archer and Bowe Keller are as different as night and day. But that doesn't stop the childhood frenemies from reconnecting whenever one of them needs some help tackling any of life's major puzzles, like figuring out why getting what you always thought you wanted isn't living up to all the hype. They might constantly rub each other the wrong way (except for the times when they rub each other the really-really right way), but there is no denying they've always made one hell of a great team. They manage to balance each other out… when they aren't driving each other crazy.

For Ry, he thought he had the perfect girl, the one who was going to run headfirst into a methodically planned future. He was going to marry young and have the same kind of legendary, life-long romance his parents did… or so he believed. His girl was going to stand by his side as he chased his dream of being a professional football player all the way to the NFL.

He was wrong.

Now, Ry's gotta figure out the difference between a bruised heart and a broken one, and the only person who can teach him the difference is Bowe.

Bowe always felt like she had to run before she learned to walk to keep up with her father's musical legacy. He's her hero, and she wants nothing more than to make him proud. Bowe's about to figure out that maybe she wasn't meant to be in a rock and roll band and that it is possible she let her father's success cloud her idea of what making music should be. Bowe needs to find her own path to fame, and there's a good chance she wouldn't be brave enough or bold enough to start over if Ry Archer hadn't charmed his way back into her life when she least expected it.

Some days they're enemies. Other days they're lovers. For a while, they were strangers. But now, it feels more like they might have always been soulmates.

Eventually, Ry and Bowe realize that letting go of an old dream and creating a new one is much easier to do with the right person by your side.

She’s also really proud that she's still around to experience all the best and worst that surviving something deeply traumatic has to offer. The last thing she needs or wants, is Hyde coming back and taking over her every thought and feeling the way he once did. Unfortunately, they picked the exact same time to come home to search for a little redemption.

When he was a little boy, the instant they met, Hyde Fuller wanted nothing more than to protect Remy Archer from everything, including herself. She gleefully took up every moment of his free time, and every ounce of his patience, as they grew alongside one another. History has a bad habit of repeating itself, and Remy has a knack for turning even the most simple of situations end over end.
