This book just hits you with a one~two punch in the prologue of just raw, desperate, lust and need that is tempered by guilt and conflict. Then it takes you back and smacks you in the face with their initial meeting and how their bantery bar pickup leads to one of these wildly, passionate and intense, supposed-to-only-be-physical interludes that becomes more than they bargained for. Everything about these guys together is just INTENSE.
Will is a military man who was ruled by honor. He believes in loyalty, fairness, and taking care of your family and your brothers. But he also has a side that can be a bit bossy and challenging and for some reason, Pierce brings that out at him. Pierce is used to being the put-together man in control and always overthinking. And Will kind of knocks him off balance by taking back some of that control in role-reversal. They bring out different sides in each other and vulnerability they are not used to. Together they are just fire, but also connect on this soul-deep level.
It was only supposed to be a short fling but spiraled into something more, but eventually time and distance caused them to drift apart. And when they do see each other again, everything is different but their intoxicating attraction is the same. The situation is just a lot more complicated, messy, and devastating.
The passion, the raw lust, the power plays, the angst, the pining, the internal conflict, frustration, guilt, regret, jealousy, and the challenge of their own values and loyalties add so much tension and drama. The way it was structured with an intriguing prologue followed by different sections makes you spend the whole time full of tension just waiting to get to the part where you know something is going to happen and then see what the repercussions will be. Then BOOM there it is!
This is an angsty, raw, steamy, passionate, heartbreaking story of soulmates, right-person-wrong-time, forced separation, forbidden love, and second chances. This book pulled me in and had me so uncomfortable, but feeling all the feels. My heart broke for them over and over. I was on this roller coaster of emotions along with them. And the heat is on another almost scorching level. It is like they are addicted and cannot get enough so it is this intense reaction and they cannot let go of even if they think they should.
It deals with a subject that I often avoid because it is just not something that I like, but I could deal with it in this book even if some of it did frustrate me and make me a bit uncomfortable. It is all part of the plotline and conflict. But it definitely had me wondering how they would ever be able to fix the situation.
And there are some cameos by beloved characters that just made it more special. They really tried to help Will and Pierce as they struggled, hurt, forced down their own needs, and sacrificed, and they both needed these trusted friends to tell them it was okay to burn down their world in order to be together.
These two authors are known for writing emotional and intense books and their styles flowed together well to create a devastating and powerful, against-all-odds love story.
