From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a new, STANDALONE novel…

ABBY:

I’m falling for the father of the baby I’m carrying.

The problem is: it’s not my baby.

And the broody widower is not looking for a long-term partner.

As a surrogate, the deal was that I’d only be in England long enough to give birth.

At first, the man seemed as pretentious as his name: Sigmund Benedictus.

He and I butted heads.

Sig challenged my intentions, accused me of just wanting to do this for the money.

Gradually, he learned to trust me.

He even became protective.

Over time, our heated animosity turned into fiery chemistry.

I was falling in love with him.

But my time here had a limit.

I needed to protect my heart from the devastatingly gorgeous older man who’d end up breaking it.

SIG:

When my in-laws told me they wanted to use my dead wife’s eggs to conceive a grandchild, I wasn’t immediately on board.

They swore that on her deathbed Britney told them it was what she wanted—but only if I fathered the baby. Her parents insisted they would be the ones to raise it.

Against my better judgment, I agreed.

I vowed to keep my heart out of it, though.

I’d continue to pretend it wasn’t happening and live the empty, single life I’d become accustomed to the past five years since Britney died.

And despite the fact that a certain younger American named Abby Knickerbocker had awakened things inside me that I thought were long dead…

I most certainly wouldn’t fall in love with the surrogate.

When I first started this I did not realize who Sig was, but then I remembered the playboy cousin in The Aristocrat who had warmed my heart by the end of that book.

Sigmund Benedictus is now a grumpy, anti-social, work-a-holic, widower in England who has lost his passion for life and avoids connections. When his former in-laws come to him with a plan for a surrogate to carry his late wife's child, he is shocked and a bit panicked.

Abby Knickerbocker is a family friend of his in-laws and she volunteered to be the surrogate. She has her own reasons but ultimately wants to help. She has also experienced loss and grief and is at a crossroads in her life. She is empathetic, caring, and sweet. But she also has a backbone and is sassy, witty, and challenges him.

They begin their journey with antagonism and mistrust. But as they travel this unconventional road together they find themselves close at times and separated by distance at others. But as layers are peeled back and guards are let down, they are also finding an inconvenient attraction and confusing feelings. But the entire situation is complicated and messy mixed up with loss, expectations, obligations, fears,  distance, and uncertain futures. The chemistry between them is natural and easy, but everything surrounding them and the future is not. Neither of them is sure what they want and can truly handle in this unconventional situation that not only involves each other but affects the lives of others.

This is a forbidden-by-circumstances, age gap, grumpy-sunshine, close proximity, and long distance, second chance love story involving hope, healing, passion, and found family. I fell for Sig all over again. From his guarded, grumpy beginnings to his protectiveness and big heart. He has perfected this hard outer shell that Abby just starts poking holes in and I loved seeing his fear, confusion, and attempts to dodge the inevitable. Abby is strong and understanding and she calls him on all of his crap. And she is unselfish as she put her life on hold to help someone and then is afraid to hope that the scary feelings she is having could ever lead anywhere for her. Together they are a hot mess of issues, hidden feelings,  and anxiety, but their story is just so beautiful and heartwarming too. I think this might be my favorite Penelope book to date. Something about this story and these characters just touched my heart.

I enjoyed getting an update with Leo and Felicity and I adored the spry Grandma figure Lavinia, and the whole blended family aspect.
Sigmund was introduced in the Aristocrat as Leo’s cousin. Since the end of that book, Leo’s life has taken a direction the playboy would have never imagined, and he is determined to not go through that pain again. He had a love, and lost her, and though he is still close with her family, he is a shell of his former self. His in-laws want to move forward, with his permission, bringing a piece of their daughter back into their life. He isn’t fully on board with the idea, but he also doesn’t want to hold them back from happiness or from having a piece of their daughter. But he is still grumpy and sullen and isn’t entirely welcoming when he meets the woman who has volunteered to carry the baby.

Abby hears her father’s best friends’ story of loss and the way they want to honor and remember their daughter and with some thought decides to offer to be the surrogate for their grandchild. She agrees to all the stipulations Sig puts into place, including traveling to and living in England while she is undergoing treatments.

I loved the entire journey of this story from start to finish. Sig is still holding on to his love for Brittany, and even as he finds himself drawn to Abby, he feels guilt for letting Brittany go. Abby has her own reasons for wanting a change, but her reasons for volunteering to be a surrogate are entirely selfless. As they get to know each other, they find themselves struggling to remain detached from each other and from the baby, something both swore they wouldn’t do. Their chemistry is natural and compelling, while they sort through all the feelings brought up by their pasts, the distance that often comes between them, and the self- imposed rules they set.

There are plenty of cameos by Leo and Felicity from The Aristocrat, and I loved Lovenia, the woman who runs the inn where Abby stays when she is in England.
