Zach
Since I was six years old, my world has revolved around two things: Carter Lockwood and hockey.
We made a pact in college before we turned pro to always put each other first. To make each other our priority, but being in love with your straight best friend can make that hard, especially when you have to watch them fall in love with someone else.
I don’t want to break my best friend's heart to save my own, but I need to put some space between us to save our friendship.
Only this time, it’s not just the defensive zone I’m protecting, but also my heart.
From the moment I met Zach Reid, we were inseparable.
Nobody really understands why I always wanted to be with him. Our relationship is what some people call codependent, but he’s been my favorite person for over two decades, and life is always calmer when he’s around.
But something changed between us over the summer, and I started to see him in a different way.
Then the pact we made in college started to fall apart, along with my football career.
I don’t know what happened or how to make it right, but there’s one thing I know for certain.
I’m lost without him.
Defensive Zone is a childhood best friends to lovers sports romance featuring a hockey player and football player. It includes unrequited love, a bi-awakening, mutual pining and all the Thunder found family vibes.
These two are just the sweetest, most adorable, in tune, co-dependent, affectionate, coupliest-non-couple of lifelong best friends...and then things get complicated.
Zach Reid plays hockey for the Chicago Thunder. He is smart, calm, a bit nerdy, and has been in love with his best friend since they were ten years old. He thinks he hides it well but it seems only Carter is clueless.
Carter Lockwood plays defense for a Denver NFL team. He is nice, funny, charming, easy-going, and a great friend. But he has no idea about Zach's true feelings, and all he knows is that he needs Zach in his life.
They spend their vacations, holidays, and off seasons together and have for many years. But it is getting harder for Zach to watch Carter date women and not get hurt. So he makes a decision to distance himself and try to mend his broken heart and preserve their friendship. But he is breaking both of them in the process.
But then some things happen that put everything in perspective and they are navigating new things...some being good and some not so good. But it is how they go through life together and just how dedicated they were to each other that warmed my heart. They really were best friends and soul mates even if it was a bumpy road to realize their full potential and manage their crazy lives.
This one is my favorite in the series so far and it hit me in the feels. I absolutely loved Zach and Carter together and they were each other's true home. They are understanding, cuddly, passionate, needy, and so perfectly well-matched and share so much history. It brings back the other couples and teammates from previous books and they make a good support system. I am excited about the setup for another story and for books about some other characters as well.
