Release Blitz: Bluebird Gold: Devney Perry
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Devney Perry comes a gripping romance set in 1983 where a woman’s search for the truth about her father’s death entangles her with the small-town sheriff and a legend of lost Montana gold.
Living in Dalton, Montana, was not what I had planned for this winter. But after my father’s sudden death, I uprooted my life to move into his tiny lakeside cabin and settle his estate. My friends tell me to sell his place and move on. But this winter is my chance to say goodbye. To remember a man who’d loved tales of Montana lore.
Taking a temporary teaching job seemed like the perfect way to keep myself busy on lonely days. Cleaning out the cabin should have been simple. Except the more I learn about my father’s life, the more questions I have about his death.
The last thing I need is a crush on Sheriff Cosi Raynes. Not only is his son my student, but his life is rooted in Montana, while mine is headed…anywhere else.
Yet as I uncover a trail of strange clues Dad left behind about a lost legend of Montana gold, staying away from Cosi is not an option. Neither is denying the attraction between us. And my winter of healing becomes a race for answers.
I came to Montana to bury the past. Now I’m falling for the man who might just be my future. And either I’ll solve this mystery, or the person in Dalton determined to hide the truth will make sure I die trying.
Ilsa Poe has moved, at least temporarily, to her Dad's old cabin to deal with it after his passing and she finds some quirky things. Unfortunately, there seems to be someone sneaking around and strange things keep happening at the cabin. She already was having a rough start in town as a new teacher, but it seems to keep escalating.
This all puts her in proximity with the handsome and charismatic Sheriff in town, Cosi Rayes. He is a single dad who is also one of her students' fathers. He is a bit serious but a good guy who is frustrated with the investigation.
But as she is cleaning things out, she starts to find some letters and instructions that could be just an old story or an old man's treasure hunt. And more things keep happening, so Cosi starts to become more protective of her. As they band together to try to figure out what is going on, their close proximity also allows their spark of attraction to catch fire. It is only supposed to be a short fling to get it out of their systems, but they seem to be catching feelings while also trying to catch the bad guys and solve the mystery.
This is a small town, forced proximity, student's parent romantic suspense and mystery story set in the 80s. It was fun to go back to a time where it was not all internet and social media. I liked both Ilsa and Cosi and his son, Spencer. It was a sexy and sweet romance with a found family and hometown aspect swirling in old mysteries.
Isla Poe has returned to Dalton, Montana to clean out her father’s cabin and set his things to right after his sudden death. She hasn’t been close to him in years, but has fond memories of visiting his cabin when she was a girl. A temporary job teaching math at the high school seems a good way to fill her days as she spends her weekends going through her father’s things. As she sorts through his things and gets to know the town, she finds she didn’t know a lot of things about her father’s recent past, and she also starts to realize that though it seems her father wanted her to find the gold he believes is hidden in the area, someone else doesn’t want her sifting through the clues.
Cosi Raynes grew up in Dalton and is now the sheriff. He has history here and knows all the town players. He is also intrigued by the new addition of Ilsa Poe after her father’s accidental death. But he also has his hands full raising his teenaged son on his own, made more difficult with the addition of his ex trying to get in contact for the first time in over a decade. When Ilsa repeatedly calls the sheriff’s office with reports of someone looking in her cabin at night, and then more sinister events occurring, Cosi would feel a lot more comfortable if Ilsa was closer to town for her safety.
It took some focus for me to stay in the 1983 time period, though that was a me thing. Parents just walking into the teacher’s classroom just isn’t done anymore and should have made it easier, so I’ll chalk that up to a me thing. But the time period was necessary to the plot as it added to the isolated elements to the lake cabin and the lack of instant connection via cell phones and social media. For that, it was a refreshing scene.
The story was filled with mystery elements, a treasure hunt, the threat of danger, and small town romance. Speaking of the romance, it sparked quickly with close proximity. But I loved watching Ilsa and Spencer build a relationship at the same time she navigated one with his father. Cosi’s teenaged son quickly became just as protective of Ilsa as his father. The mystery of the gold added an element of tension to the background that gave reasons for Ilsa to be in close proximity to the sheriff, but also made her cabin feel isolated and creepy.
The audio version was perfection. Connor Crais as Cosi had the perfect gravely timbre. Samantha Brentmoor gave Ilsa’s thoughts a gravity that fit her current situation and personality to a T.
This is the first in a new series from Devney Perry and though I don’t know exactly which direction the series will go, I always look forward to more from her!
