Kacey
Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving
accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but
one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant
disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive
lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle
Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She
just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and
then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.
Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.
But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

"Just breathe"...ten tiny breaths...Seize them. Feel them. Love them."
Sisters
Kacey and Livie both dealing with the tragic loss of their family.
Kacey is the "looming thundercloud" and Livie is "the sunshine breaking
through". Kacey is closed off, pushes people away, hates being touched,
and is solely focused on taking care of her young sister. Livie is
sweet, loving, and a joy to be around. They end up in a small apartment
complex and meet new friends that slowly become like family.
Along
the way another new tenant, Trent pushes his way under Kacey's skin.
She tries to resist, but she is drawn to him. He gets past her defenses.
He tries to make her happy. But he has his own secrets.
"Damn this guy. He seems to flip flop from Good Samaritan to Evil Tempter with each new sentence out of his mouth."
I
struggle to reactivate my shields, to form a barrier from this Godlike
creature To end all reaction to him so I can just live my life and keep
it untangled from his issues. It's so much easier.
In
no time, this guy has created permanent fissures in my carefully
constructed suit of sanity, and I don't know how to fight against, to
protect myself, to keep him out. To keep them all out.
Their
love story is not easy. There is a lot of pushing and pulling, running
away, protecting themselves, and trying to let go of the past. There are
secrets, lies, omissions, and guilt. I can say that I figured out what
his secret was, but it did not ruin the story for me. I really wanted to
see Kacey and Trent get past it and see healing occur. It was a really
sad and sweet and heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time.
"Give me your heart, Kacey. I'll take everything that comes with it."
The
characters were very well developed and it was easy to get invested in
them. I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to Livie's story in
the next book One Tiny Lie.
