The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi—pure-bloods—have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals—well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:

Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

Unfortunately, she’s crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn’t her biggest problem—staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

I am excited to say that this review will be a bit different. I have teamed up with Ria from A Bookish Escape for a Tag Team Review.  If you have never heard of A Bookish Escape, well then click the link and head over there immediately. Lindy, Ria and Ro are one of my all-time favorite blogs to read! Not to mention their blog is hella cool AND they have really fun features on their blog.

“Two people see each across a room or their skin brushes. Their souls recognize the person as their own. It doesn’t need time to figure it. The soul always knows… whether it’s right or wrong.”

Jennifer Armentrout, you are a goddess when it comes to writing amazingly beautiful characters and unique worlds that stretch my imagination! What I love most is the forbidden love she mixes between worlds and characters. For example in the Covenant series it is FORBIDDEN for Half-Bloods and Pures to interact romantically with each other. The Half-Bloods are severely punished if they are caught while the Pures maybe get a slap on the wrist. So both Alex (half-blood) and Aiden (Pure) know there can never be anything between them other than trainer and trainee.

“Everything could come to a crashing end for us if we were caught, but it didn’t matter. Right now, being with him seemed worth whatever consequence could come from it. This was right, like it was meant to be. There was no logical explanation for it.”

Aiden and Alex are a no no for each other, yet they can't seem to stop the growing attraction and affection. I had fun watching them dance around each other. Aiden is so serious; he does not break the rules, while Alex, well Alex has this mischievous side to her and she rarely follows the rules. These two had some great chemistry, and their banter was fun and witty at times. It took me a couple of chapters for our hero and heroine to grow on  me, but when they did I was rooting for them. I ate up every word between them, and I found I couldn't turn the pages quick enough to see them interacting together again. Ladies if you love Daemon, you will love Aiden just as much. Although Aiden isn't as much of an ass, he tends to lean more towards the sweet protective side. He was quiet, and I adored how his fun side tended to peek out at the right moments. I think that is what drew me to him. Aiden was not as in your face with his personality as Daemon was, it kinda sneaks up on you and captures you when you least expect it.

“Need covers itself with love, but need… need is never love. Always beware of the one who needs you. There is always a want behind a need, you see.”

Oh, I can't forget Seth! I am not sure what I think of him yet, but I think that he will prove to be an interesting twist to this series. He completes Alex's other half and adds something spicy to this love triangle of good vs bad. Normally he would be my go to guy, seeing as he is a typical bad boy, but I am leaning more towards Aiden (at least in this book). I want the "good guy" to win this time around.

The secondary characters were also amazing and fun. One of my favorite characters in this book next to our hero and heroine was Caleb, Alex's best friend. I totally adore him. He had some of the best lines and Caleb was a great support unit for her. She didn’t have many people she could trust and he rocked all around for her. They were partners in crime. I can’t wait to read more of their antics in the rest of the series.

“You better have had a baby, killed someone, or slept with a pure. Those are your three options. Anything less is unsuitable.”

Half-Blood was one of those books I couldn’t decide on for rating. I went back and forth and wavered between four and five stars. I just kept comparing it to Daemon and Katy, their chemistry and witty lines. I realized I just had to stop. This was Alex and Aiden. Two totally different characters and the more I read the more hooked I became. I finally decided to go with a five because I am still thinking about it, and 3 days later, I am compulsively thinking about buying book 2 and putting all my other reads aside to read it. Half-Blood was full of witty lines,  fun and intense moments, action, denial, deception, twists, great characters, and a love triangle. So for me this is a totally recommendable book and a must read!
