There’s complicated. And there’s Rowen Sterling.

After numbing pain for the past five years with boys, alcohol, and all-around apathy, she finds herself on a Greyhound bus to nowhere Montana the summer after she graduates high school. Her mom agreed to front the bill to Rowen’s dream art school only if Rowen proves she can work hard and stay out of trouble at Willow Springs Ranch. Cooking breakfast at the crack of dawn for a couple dozen ranch hands and mucking out horse stalls are the last things in the world Rowen wants to spend her summer doing.

Until Jesse Walker saunters into her life wearing a pair of painted-on jeans, a cowboy hat, and a grin that makes something in her chest she’d thought was frozen go boom-boom. Jesse’s like no one else, and certainly nothing like her. He’s the bright and shiny to her dark and jaded.

Rowen knows there’s no happily-ever-after for the golden boy and the rebel girl—happily-right-now is a stretch—so she tries to forget and ignore the boy who makes her feel things she’s not sure she’s ready to feel. But the more she pushes him away, the closer he seems to get. The more she convinces herself she doesn’t care, the harder she falls.

When her dark secrets refuse to stay locked behind the walls she’s kept up for years, Rowen realizes it’s not just everyone else she needs to be honest with. It’s herself.

Rowan is damaged, broken, lost and on her way to spend the summer at a ranch in Montana. It wasn't her choice and she is not sure what she is in store for, but she is doing what she has to do to in order to prepare for her future.

I'd been labeled a goth, an emo, a druggie, a loser, and my personal favorite only because it showed just how ignorant people were: a freak.

But she meets  Jesse  and the Walker family and she begins to see that life can be different. The awkward, freak of a girl finds a new purpose in life. She begins to see what love and acceptance feels like. It is not easy for her to get past what she has always believed and to try to be who she really is deep down.

Nope, the reason I'd remember Jesse's name from that day forward was because of the way he looked at me. He didn't study me like I was something different and scary. He looked at me like I was a human being, no different from himself, and yet unique just the same.

Jesse is the sweetest, kindest, most patient cowboy. He is naturally charismatic, attractive, and a girl magnet. But he is also humble, supportive, and has a good heart. He sees the Rowan that she has been hiding from the world and he likes her. He does not judge her or try to make her something she is not, but instead helps her uncover who she really is under all of the layers.

"We all want to open up to someone Rowen. The hard part is finding someone we trust enough to open up to. That person we're not afraid to let into the darkest parts of our world."

Rowan was hidden under walls and fears. She dressed and acted in a way to keep people at arm's length to avoid rejection. She had not been exposed to healthy relationships and had been taught to feel badly about herself. It is hard to let go of past insecurities and negativity. But it was a pleasure watching her begin to open up, change, and grow.

But when I looked into those eyes of his that saw everything, those eyes that saw me. I knew the fight would be worth it. The struggle to let him n when I wanted to barricade the windows and lower the gates would be a battle I'd never regret fighting.

They faced challenges as a couple both in present situations and from their pasts. But they really did fit together despite seeming like they were opposites. They were funny, sweet, emotional, and inspiring. The Walkers were a wonderful family and it just made you want to move to the ranch and work along beside them. They were honest, hardworking and non judgmental people.

Willow Springs brought something out in me, almost like it was drawing out the poison inside of me and filling in the empty places with purpose.

It was a sweet inspirational story of the power of love, healing, and family. And showed that blood does not make a family...love does. This story had  a really good message and it was an enjoyable read. I do wish that there was more to the ending. I was really hoping for an epilogue. Or maybe she will write a second book, because I think there are more stories for this couple and a few other characters from this book that are worth telling.

Thanks to Nicole Williams and AToMR tours for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
