Two stories so deeply intertwined, you’ll think you know how they intersect…but you’ll be wrong….

Zack Martin

The day I met Emily Bennett my whole world changed. Sure, we were just kids, but I was old enough to know my life would never be the same. She was my best friend. My destiny. My fate. I wasn’t wrong…I just didn’t know how twisted fate could be.

Nikki Fallon

After the death of my mother, moving from my dark and dreary trailer park to sunny California, I was focused on one thing – finding a sister I’d only just learned existed. Falling in love with him wasn’t part of the plan. But he filled a void I never knew was possible to fill. He had to be my fate. My destiny. Until the day I finally found out who my sister was…and how twisted fate could be.

He looks up and I watch his eyes take me in. Slowly. They rake over me, dropping from my eyes to my glossed lips down to my exposed shoulders. Taking his time, he follows the neckline of my simple, yet body contouring sundress, lingering when he reaches my full breasts. I’m sufficiently covered, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t aware that the dress showed off my assets well. Tight around my chest, gathering snuggly at the waist, with a scant amount of cleavage. Just enough coverage to still leave something for him to imagine. And I watch his face change as his imagination takes off running.

His eyes drift down my legs, tanned now from the eternal California sun. Momentarily he’s lost in what he sees and doesn’t even notice I’m watching him leer. Totally worth the extra effort getting ready tonight, I couldn’t be happier at the reaction I get. Eventually, his eyes make their way back up to mine and I arch one eyebrow, letting him know he’s been caught. A normal reaction might be to look embarrassed or perhaps even flustered a little. But not Zack. Instead, he flashes me a wicked grin. “You look incredible.” He’s the one doing the leering, yet I’m the one who ends up blushing.

Zack Martin was living the picture picture life...handsome, popular, intelligent, star quarterback, great family, and beautiful girlfriend. We see his younger life and  progress to his current High School existence. But one decision causes his life to change in an instant and soon he cannot see past the darkness, his guilt, and regret.

Nikki Fallon suffered a loss and life change. She is new to California, starting over, and searching for something.

These two individual lives converge and they are instantly drawn to each other. But Zack will barely allow himself the thought of moving on or being happy again. And Nikki has her own issues to deal with. So their beginning is tentative and confusing at best.

I really liked Zack. He was real, caring and just a good guy. But he made choices that changed the direction his life was going and left him full of guilt and regret. He became lost and broken until Nikki came along and managed to start to break through.

Nikki had spunk and tenacity. She had to be strong to deal with her life and was a natural fixer and soother. But she also needed to feel wanted, loved, and that she belonged.

Together they had chemistry and rapport. They had to push each other to open up and share and get past their walls.  But they could relate to each other and understand each other on a deeper level. And that  intense connection neither of them expected might be just the thing that will allow them both to feel alive and move forward.

But will secrets and issues from the past burst their little new found bubble of happiness?

I enjoyed the side characters of her animated best friend Ashley, his larger than life friend Keller and sweet and sassy Allie. I would be interested to see more with these characters in the future.

This story is a great example of how sometimes destiny and fate may follow a convoluted and broken path but still can lead you to where you need to be. It was told in both points of view allowing us all access to these troubled characters. It was an intriguing, emotional, heartfelt young adult story of love, loss, grief, and hope.

There was a lot to this book, even before Zack and Nikki meet. They have both had a rough few years, and could not fathom the twist fate had in store for either of them. Nikki received a shock after her mother passed away and now she finds herself in California getting to know the aunt she never knew she had, and looking for a sister she also didn’t know existed. Meeting Zack was a bright point in an otherwise confusing, emotional journey.

I loved Zack’s little notes to NIkki. Based on his mental state when they met, these notes give a glimpse at his feelings (for Nikki) long before he can verbalize them. He is such a good man, that his pain and guilt was hard to watch for a long time, but his journey back to himself was wonderful.

Growing up with a paranoid, bipolar mother, trusting strangers was difficult for Nikki, and as far as she knows her aunt is one of those strangers. Over the course of Nikki’s search for answers, while I would have gone about it differently, I understood why she made the decisions she did. Grief and shock plays out differently for different characters and she did what she thought was safest and the fastest way to get her answers.

Neither was looking for a relationship, and at the time Zack was about as closed off as a person could be, but the pull between them was too strong for either to fight. I loved the idea of destiny pulling them despite their circumstances. The spark between them was immediate and inevitable.

The title concept evolves to mean several things to different characters over the course of the book. In some ways, every major (and a few minor) characters face being left behind, whether they realize it or not. And the implications from being left play out differently for each person and makes this a dynamic theme throughout the story.

This was a quick read with characters that were easily likeable. There was a great mix of vulnerability and strength in both Nikki and Zack. While some of the answers to Nikki’s search were clear long before Nikki learned the truth, I found it interesting how those who did know the truth handled the teens.

Dylan Scott

Dylan Scott is a New York trial attorney, wife and mother of four. She believes her job as a trial attorney is a subcategory to the field of entertainment more than law. With a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature she believed teaching English was a destined career choice until she realized her life long talent of "argument" could actually be her job. A recent, fairly boring, midlife crisis resulted in a brief stint as a middle school English teacher which confirmed that she wasn't ready to give up the law. Dylan has also taught legal courses at the college level and worked with at-risk inner city youth in the roles of mentor and coach. She is co-author Vi Keeland's biggest fan.
