Zeke (The Powers That Be #2)

Zeke Powers should’ve come with a warning label.

He was hot.

He was sexy.

And he was a bad boy through and through.

The things he said to me had me blushing and my toes curling.

But he was someone I totally didn’t need walking into my life, screwing up the plans I’d made and turning my world upside down.

Although I’d been living a no-frills, no-fun existence, I felt it was necessary to get where I was going. Keep your eye on the prize and all that.

But Zeke was determined to prove to me that what I desired most (him) was just what I needed.

When someone shows up in your life three times in a row, fate is screaming at you to notice them.

Scarlett O'Rourke is a college student with a busy life and many responsibilities. She does not have time for a relationship and her history with men makes her wary. But all of a sudden Zeke Powers is showing up everywhere and is interested in her despite her tongue-tied behavior  and even personal humiliation.

I was a four-point-oh student, for chrissakes! But this guy just seemed to bring out the dumb in me, his hotness just lobotomizing.

She's awkward. He's not.
She does not see her true beauty. He's GQ/Sports Model type hot.
She has bad luck with guys. He is Big Man On Campus and all the women flock to him.
She's got all kind of stress and financial issues. His life is good with a promising football career.
She's scared to death. He is confidant enough for both of them.
She is determined to fail. He is determined to win.
Both are impulsive at times and hot-headed.

"Oh, I'll have you, Scarlett...And when I get you, it's gonna be awesome. But for now you should know this guy also loves the the thrill of the chase."

And that's what I was afraid of, that by going out with Zeke I would have fun. And I'd like it. I'd like him. And my plans would all go to sh**.

I loved the banter and play between Zeke and Scarlett. I have to say that I totally adored Zeke. He had the cocky bad boy image going for him, but was actually a sweet, thoughtful, caring guy. But no matter who he really was, he constantly had to fight the image or speculation about him because Scarlett often believed the worst. Her history made her so insecure and untrusting that she was always waiting for Zeke to screw up. So the poor guy was always dodging bullets.

"When's it ever gonna be enough, Scarlett?"

But I still liked them together. They were a real, genuinely sweet couple. She was a smart, sassy, and a hard worker that took care of those around her. She did not like asking for help. But he just wanted to make her life better and easier. They had a strong connection and good chemistry. But they had issues to overcome.

"Let me be your hero, Scarlett."

This was fast-paced, funny, unfiltered and almost frantic at times. It was a quick read and not too complex, but it was fun. It was told in Scarlett's point of view so her scattered thoughts and mixed feelings set the pace. But the epilogue in Zeke's point of view made me smile. I loved getting more with Gable and his girl Scout,  and his other brothers Ryker, and Loch. These Powers brothers are sexy, sweet, and love hard. I am looking forward to Ryker (the intense one) and Loch (the easy going youngest one).

Zeke Powers is the oldest of the Powers brothers. A senior finance major, he is also a star running back with draft prospects.

Scarlett O’Rourke is focused on the future. Having taken two years off of school in order to help her family, she is in the final stretch of her schooling before she can open the bakery of her dreams. But that focus also means she doesn’t date. She was burned hard, twice, by serious relationships in the past and has decided she doesn’t need the hurt that comes with dating.

After a series of encounters with Zeke, Scarlett decides to let down her walls and go on a date with the persistent man. But can she let go of her past pain in order to trust that what Zeke says is real? Can Zeke convince Scarlett he is not like her past boyfriends?

This was a fun, sweet, cute read. And fast. From start to finish I was entertained and engrossed in the story.

I really liked Scarlett for the first half to two thirds of the book. She is one of those girls who is so focused on what she feels is her responsibility that she doesn’t take the time to let herself go. She also gets stuck in her head about her past. Her actions in the last part of the book had me shaking my head at her, wishing I could knock some sense into her though.

Zeke was smooth. While he was popular and confident, he didn’t slip into the overconfident realm, nor was he a player. He was just a steady, strong presence.

Because this was such a fast read, I didn’t feel like we got much from the other brothers but what was there was great. These 4 guys are a close-knit unit with a strong connection. Gable and Scout made a few appearances as well, but as this was not their story there isn’t a lot of detail about what they are up to in their own lives.

This was just what I needed in the scope of my reading though. Fairly smooth, drama that was relatable and fit within the bounds of the characters, it was just a nice, easy read.

Gable Powers had all the makings of everything my father had ever warned me about: a reputation that was anything but stellar, a dirty mouth that had me shivering at the things he uttered in my ear, and a body (oh, God, that body) that was covered in tattoos, all of which added up to a solid ten-point-oh on the bad-boy scale.

The first time I met him, I instantly loathed him.

The second time was even worse.

He was a jerk. He was an ass.

He had secrets.

He was nothing I thought I ever wanted.

So why couldn’t I resist him?
