From the USA Today bestselling author of Midnight Captive, the latest Killer Instincts novel is “off-the-charts-hot”* romantic suspense that takes readers into the heart of an enigmatic mercenary...

Out of all the stone-cold mercenaries in Jim Morgan's black ops organization, Derek “D” Pratt is the most intimidating. He is tight-lipped and covered in tattoos, and even the other guys on his team are afraid to ask him about his past. D’s been off the grid for years, but after his teammate Sullivan is mistakenly captured in his place, D is forced to come out of hiding and face his demons.

When D lands in Mexico, he’s ready to risk everything to save his friend. To complicate matters, Sofia Amaro, a feisty doctor whom D had a one-night stand with months ago, has tracked him down. And in an instant she’s unintentionally caught up in his life-threatening rescue mission.

Now D must extract not one but two people from the most violent world he's ever encountered. And one of them is carrying his child...

Derek "D" Pratt is a man not ruled by emotions...he does not even think he has emotions or a heart anymore. He's mysterious, moody, quiet, cold, calculating, ruthless, and violent. The only connections he really has are those of his team, but even they don't really know him or about his past.

Sofia Amaro is the team's private physician in Mexico. She's smart, sassy, bossy, and stubborn. She is not intimidated by the burly black ops men she works on including Derek Pratt. She stands right up to them and bosses them around. One day things get a bit heated and they have one brief passionate encounter that leads to complications.

Sullivan "Sully" Port has been missing for months. His best friend and team mate Liam is a wreck and blames himself. But Derek thinks it is his fault so he is blaming himself as well. When things heat up, Derek, Liam, Ash,and Sofia all find themselves caught up in danger and Derek needs to be the one to keep everyone alive in the face of his enemies. And Sofia wants more than just to stay alive. She wants to fix what is broken in Derek. Although he deems himself unworthy and unfixable. His past damaged him to a point he believes he is beyond repair and his black ops history only reinforced it.

But she is the one person determined to show him that he can and does feel and that he is worth more than he thinks. All she's ever wanted is a family and to belong. And somehow this intimidating man makes her feel safe, protected, and at peace. She is strong enough to stand up to him and fight for him. Is he strong enough to let his barriers down and open himself up to true vulnerability for the first time?

This was my fave of series.I think this may be my fave of series. like an uncaring a** without feelings and that nothing could penetrate his defenses. But Sofia got in and scared the crap out of him just making him want to build up his defenses more. But those moments where we could see under that armor just meant more--the smiles, the laughs, his protectiveness, his confusion, his vulnerability, his fear, his sacrifices,  his awkwardness, and the glimmer of hope.

And Sofia was so tough, tenacious, and caring. She saw the real man underneath, but was strong enough to hammer at his walls without being intimidated and scared away. She had her own abandonment issues, fears, and insecurities, but she did not let them rule her decisions. She was willing to fight for what she needed and to support Derek in a way he was not used to.

Their chemistry was hot and intense, but more importantly it was where Derek could not ignore the ever growing emotional connection between them. But to truly admit to caring for Sofia or others will be the hardest thing for Derek to have to do, because that means making himself completely vulnerable to being hurt or disappointed.

Sully's story had me tense and worried. His struggles and Liam's strong need and desperation to help him broke my heart. We have seen this deep friendship, connection, and burgeoning attraction growing for several books and this situation put them to the ultimate test.  This was Sully's fight for life and the team's mission to find him. Their issues are far from resolved and I am so hoping that the next book is for Sully and Liam.

This installment was packed with suspense, danger, twists, and tension. It was non-stop action and drama. There were multiple enemies, lots of dirty deeds, murder, mayhem, fights, kidnappings...all that good action stuff and black ops missions. But this series is also about team unity and love. Many of our friends from this series make appearances in this one and we get to see progression in their relationships as well as see them band together to help their team members. These are strong and deadly men and women and when they meet their match it turns into a whole new level of danger and drama. This one especially had characters whose pasts had marked them and they had emotional issues and fears to face. I loved seeing the changes and growth in the characters. I enjoyed the team coming together and their continued gelling as an extended, untraditional family unit.

Sophia is not ignorant to the danger involved in Derek Pratt, nor is she ignorant of the fact that he is cold and closed off, even from his team. With as much money as Morgan gives for her clinic, when he or his men need medical care, she drops what she is doing to be at their service.

Derek is a loner. Quiet and unapproachable, he does the job and carries on, but he doesn’t open up; he doesn’t share histories.

Sophia sees enough to know he’s a hard man, but that doesn’t stop her from finding him attractive. When one night leads to a needed conversation, Sophia finds herself tailing Derek to Cancun, in the middle of an op she should never have encountered.

There two have such a push/pull relationship. When they are even in what could be considered a relationship. Sophia is the perfect blend of soft and hard headed to break through to Derek. He is so sure he isn’t capable of loving anyone that he needs her to show him.

Both of their pasts do a lot to explain their present behaviors and mindsets. I found new sympathy for Derek when I had a hard time liking him in the beginning. Sophia was easy to like though. She is strong and independent, and though she finds herself facing a future she hadn’t planned for, she embraces it wholeheartedly.
The op unfolds in such a way that readers understand what is going on and where each individual character is in the grand scheme, even when the characters haven't seen everything unfold yet. I was amazed at the amount of detail and weaving that went in to this one story. The revenge, the mistaken identities, the unintended connections flow freely and kept me turning the pages as fast as I could.

There is a lot of Liam and Sullivan in this story. Sully’s disappearance and his possible whereabouts are at the center of a lot of the action. The things Sully endured will change him forever and Liam is lost without his best friend. I love these two, and love that we got to see so much of them, but I couldn’t help like feeling their influence here overshadowed some of Derek and Sophia. I had a hard time focusing on Derek and Sophia because I was so concerned with Liam and Sully. That being said, I’m still waiting for their book!
