When you’ve lived your life as a criminal…
When you’ve done unspeakable things …
When your soul has become dark and stained…
The path to redemption begins where you least expect it.
Kyle Sommerville is in hiding and doesn’t want to be found by anyone. Certainly not by his quirky, free-spirited neighbor who’s managed to push her way past the walls he’s built around him. But Jane Cresson’s indomitable will and insatiable curiosity about her reclusive neighbor makes it impossible for Kyle to stay immersed in his dark world.
Little by little, she claws through his shell.
Day by day, she gets him to smile a little more.Night by night, they both find pleasure they never knew existed.
Day by day, she gets him to smile a little more.Night by night, they both find pleasure they never knew existed.
When Kyle’s terrible past is exposed, Jane begins to think she’s in over her head. Can her love for this broken man finally clear his path to redemption, or will Kyle’s darkness finally extinguish every bit of hope she’s put into him?
Jane Cresson lives next door to the lighthouse in the tiny town she grew up in. She teaches art at the local schools. Her quirky personality drives her to try to get to know the reclusive new lighthouse keeper, but her quiet nature means she isn’t always smooth about hiding her attraction to him. Her personality shot so much humor and light into this story -- a necessity to counter Kyle’s gruff seriousness.
Jane had to work hard to get Kyle to give her a chance. He was hard, closed off, and actively avoided contact with everyone. But he also has a protective nature, as his actions in Wicked Bond proved, and he can’t help but slowly warm up to his persistent neighbor. Starting things with an expiration date looming isn’t Jane’s normal style, but the chemistry between them is beyond anything she’s ever known before.
While readers familiar with Sawyer Bennett’s books will recognize Kyle as a side character from Shaken Not Stirred and Wicked Bond, this story stands alone easily. This is what happens after the events that Kyle inserted himself into during Wicked Bond, but all the background information needed to understand who he is and why he is in this tiny, Maine town are provided within these pages.
This was thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. Kyle’s secrets kept the tension high and the pages flowing. The redemption Kyle needs to clear his conscience of the horrific deeds he had participated in is hard to find and he spends much of the time thinking himself not good enough for Jane.
I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is not part of a series but Kyle appeared in Shaken, Not Stirred (Last Call #5) and Wicked Bond (Wicked Horse#5). His sister Andrea is the heroine in With A Twist (Last Call#4). They can all be read as stand alones.
Kyle Sommerville is just hiding out with a new identity to protect him from enemies he made while working undercover for the ATF. He refused true witness protection and is on his own in a remote location and considered "dead". He is lost and has done and seen things that have hardened him and make him think he does not deserve true happiness. He is a loner, stoic, gruff, and reclusive.
His new neighbor, Jane, is curious and relentless in her attempts to get to know the mysterious man. She is cheery, bright, funny, optimistic, and quirky. She pushes into his life and under his skin.
He's got up walls, but she keeps chipping away at them. He wants her, but knows it is a bad idea. He tries to friend zone her. But it gets harder and harder to refuse. His secrets are dangerous and he is not proud of his past. But she makes him want. And she sees he needs more than he thinks he does.
Their chemistry is explosive. But Kyle is clear that anything that could happen between them will have an expiration date and feelings cannot get involved. He knows he is on borrowed time and thinks he can be satisfied just soaking up all the good he can until his time is up.
But he never knows when or if his secret is going to come out and how she might react.
This is about Kyle needing to find his humanity, self worth, and confidence again. Jane sees the good in people and encourages him to find it in himself. But to move on from his past he will have to seek forgiveness from her and himself.
I have always been intrigued by Kyle since we met in previous Sawyer Bennett books Shaken, Not Stirred (Last Call #5) and Wicked Bond (Wicked Horse#5). His life took a dark and dangerous turn, but deep down he never wanted to be fully consumed by the darkness he was living in. But he was not sure if the damage could ever be reversed.
His one good deed from his recent past put him in the path towards redemption, but he needed an extra big dose of sunshine and light to even begin to lead him towards the man he wanted to be again.
This is funny, sweet, sexy, and even swoony. It was truly a story of a man in need of forgiveness, hope, and redemption, but afraid to grasp it. I really liked both characters and getting their dual points of view. Jane was such a breath of fresh air and unique. She just lit up the pages and had me smirking at her quirky and pushy behavior. And Kyle just had this natural charisma and vulnerability under that hard facade. I loved seeing their changing dynamics and Kyle beginning to show signs of life.
Her best friend, Miranda, added some support and girl power. But this story really centered on the couple in the isolated small town and the possible external threats in the situation Kyle was involved in. It just put their connection and passion more at the forefront of the story without a lot of extra background characters pulling the attention away.
And I have to say the man on the cover...he just IS Kyle Sommerville in all of his hot and broody glory! I am so glad that Sawyer decided to write his story.

Living under an alias, he is supposed to keep a low profile, but in a small town, a low profile is harder to keep than it seems. His family thinks him dead, his enemies are looking for him. His new neighbor, Jane, is curious and relentless in her attempts to get to know the mysterious man. She is cheery, bright, funny, optimistic, and quirky. She pushes into his life and under his skin.
