Enter a world of immortal danger and desire—and discover an incredible fate borne of blood.

Tendra: One minute, I’m a bartender in gritty Mission City; the next, I’m whisked away by a vampire named Athan who tells me that I’m the lifeblood of his clan. It sounds unbelievable, but he’s got evidence I can’t deny. Turns out, Athan belongs to an underground society of vampires who feed only on humans with their consent. Their enemies have no such qualms, and they want me dead. The only thing standing in their way is strong, sexy Athan. And the closer we get, the more tempted I am to let Athan feed. . . .

Athan: How could I have known when I snatched this snarky, beautiful human off the streets that she would change my destiny? As a loyal soldier, I must deliver Tendra to our future king—my brother. Empowered with the blood of ten generations of the Gregorie breed, she is fated to rule as our queen. But there’s something between us that’s so intoxicating, so carnal, I can’t help wanting Tendra for myself . . . even if it’s treason.

I really do not read much paranormal anymore, but when an author I like comes out with a paranormal series, I am more likely to jump in. I did so with Megan Erickson's Silver Tip Pack shifter series and I enjoyed that,  so figured I might as well try out her new vamps too.

Tendra Parrish is a waitress in Mission. After the death of her mother, she is alone and just trying to figure out what she is going to do with her life. Then one night that choice is unexpectedly taken away from her. A vampire named Athan of the Gregorie Clan comes for her and explains not only her destiny, but also helps her understand more about her past.

It is hard for her to believe, but he makes a compelling argument. She is intelligent, sarcastic, opinionated, strong, and a fighter. She won't make it easy on him, but soon she and Athan are on a perilous journey trying to make it back to his clan. Athan is supposed to be her Blood Guard and protect her until he can deliver her to his brother who will take over as King. With Tendra by his brother's side and providing her special blood, it is supposed to make their clan the most powerful.

Athan has been has been trained for this position, and has a strong sense of honor and duty. He knows his place. He is dangerous, protective, and smart, but also patient and kind. He knows she is off limits to him. But that does not stop him from wishing their lives were different. And all Tendra knows is that Athan is risking his life for her and is being a support to her during a challenging time. She does not know his brother, but sure knows that she is attracted to this vampire that she is not supposed to be. And it is getting harder and harder to follow the rules while outrunning their enemies.

What happens if they make it to the Gregorie compound where their destinies are supposed to be fulfilled?

I liked the world building here with different types of vampires and some unique characteristics that I have not seen in vamps in other books. I liked Athan and Tendra and I enjoyed getting both of points of view. Their connection is intense, primal, and a constant source of tension. This one has some humor, steam, emotion, suspense, danger, and action. There are some twists and surprises. The side characters added more depth and drama. It kept me interested and it teased the next book, Blood Veil and I will definitely be interested to see how that story goes.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Megan Erickson is a USA Today bestselling author of romance that sizzles. Her books have a touch of nerd, a dash of humor, and always have a happily ever after. A former journalist, she switched to fiction when she decided she liked writing her own endings better.
She lives in Pennsylvania with her very own nerdy husband and two kids. Although rather fun-sized, she’s been told she has a full-sized personality. When Megan isn’t writing, she’s either lounging with her two cats named after John Hughes characters or… thinking about writing.
