This is fast-paced due to action and suspense, but also due to how fast they develop trust and is a bit insta-lovey. It was a pretty quick trip from vampires not existing to relying on one. I would have liked a bit more time for relationship development, but I was able to go along with it since they did have intense chemistry and they were thrust in desperate situations. But it is also about two lost and lonely individuals truly connecting, and about trust, loyalty, sacrifice, and family.

In the midst of supernatural chaos, worlds and hearts collide.
Celia: Having never known my parents, I’ve always felt like an orphan. All I want is a normal life. But after I’m attacked in my bedroom by one vampire—and rescued by another—it’s about time to give up on “normal” once and for all. Idris, the second in command of the Gregorie vampire clan, has come to my aid, but his motives for saving me are unclear. And what surprises me most is my attraction to his heated gaze. . . .
Idris: Terror. Curiosity. Arousal. These are the natural impulses of a human female, not the spawn of the ruthless Valarian king. Is it possible that Celia is unaware of her bloodline—and the power coursing through her veins? As the daughter of my archenemy, she was supposed to be my ransom. But how quickly the heat of desire changes everything. Now the family Celia has always craved is trying to kill her, and it’s up to me to save her again—when all I really want to do is make her mine.

Idris Gregorie is on a mission for revenge against the Valkerie King after barely surviving a plot and finding out he had been lied to his entire life. He is angry, bitter, and determined not to fail. And he thinks the way to do get it is by watching and using the King's hybrid daughter, Celia. He does not expect her to be ignorant of her lineage and about the existence of vampires. She is quiet, a loner, does not get close to people, and has no clue where she came from. So she is thrust into a chaotic and mysterious world and having to rely on Idris.
And along the way the more impulsive and emotional Gregorie brother finds himself attracted to and protective of Celia. He saves her from danger, but has his own agenda as well. So there is resistance, denial, confusion, and gradual attachment building between people who are supposed to be enemies. But there are even more forces at work than they realize and soon they are both caught up in something they did not see coming.
And now it might take a miracle for them all to get out alive and well...and not start a war.

I really enjoy this vampire world the author has created and their unique abilities and legends. I enjoyed getting more with his brother, Athan and his mate, Tendra, as well as their friends, Zeb, Dru, and Roxy. Celia has a couple of people close to her that also added depth to the story. Even though this one could be read as a stand alone and the author does explain the necessary information, I think it will be enjoyed more if you read Blood Guard first. I would like to see another book in this series about Zeb or Amelia.

Enter a world of immortal danger and desire—and discover an incredible fate borne of blood.
Tendra: One minute, I’m a bartender in gritty Mission City; the next, I’m whisked away by a vampire named Athan who tells me that I’m the lifeblood of his clan. It sounds unbelievable, but he’s got evidence I can’t deny. Turns out, Athan belongs to an underground society of vampires who feed only on humans with their consent. Their enemies have no such qualms, and they want me dead. The only thing standing in their way is strong, sexy Athan. And the closer we get, the more tempted I am to let Athan feed. . . .
Athan: How could I have known when I snatched this snarky, beautiful human off the streets that she would change my destiny? As a loyal soldier, I must deliver Tendra to our future king—my brother. Empowered with the blood of ten generations of the Gregorie breed, she is fated to rule as our queen. But there’s something between us that’s so intoxicating, so carnal, I can’t help wanting Tendra for myself . . . even if it’s treason.

Megan Erickson is a USA Today bestselling author of romance that sizzles. Her books have a touch of nerd, a dash of humor, and always have a happily ever after. A former journalist, she switched to fiction when she decided she liked writing her own endings better.
She lives in Pennsylvania with her very own nerdy husband and two kids. Although rather fun-sized, she’s been told she has a full-sized personality. When Megan isn’t writing, she’s either lounging with her two cats named after John Hughes characters or… thinking about writing.
