I fell in love with Sydney Hastings when I was ten years old.
At sixteen, we whispered promises of forever.
When I was twenty-two I broke them all. I left her and promised never to return.

After my father's death, I’m forced to go home to Sugarloaf for six months. She'll be everywhere, no longer just in my memories and regrets.

When we’re together, it’s as though time never stopped. She’s still the one I want, but I don’t deserve her. Instead of apologizing, I take that beautiful, broken woman in my arms. But after that, it’s her turn to leave me.

Now I have to fight. For her. For us. For the life we both want …

“A true second shot will split the first arrow and create a solid path,” I say without thinking about it.
“Because I usually screw up the first time and need the second shot.”

Declan Arrowood. Oh my, talk about a broken boy turning into a tortured man. Sydney was the love of his life even at a young age, but one night ruined all of his plans. He is the oldest brother and protector, and in order to save them all, he had to make sacrifices. They all left Sugar Loaf and their abusive father, but now after his death, the four of them are required to take 6 month turns at the family farm in order to get what he owes them. So Declan is about to face all of his ghosts and demons.

Sydney Hastings is the girl he left behind breaking both of their hearts. She has taken over her own family's farm, is a lawyer, and a volunteer EMT. She as everything going for her, but still has a void in her life. One visit from Declan and they find themselves acting on their attraction but it also has consequences she is not prepared for.

Months later, he is back for his temporary stay. But no matter how much she pushes him, chases him or begs, he just won't break. She has a secret and she sees no other choice but to run away from the pain.  He's got his own secrets, guilt, unresolved issues, and does not feel worthy. And she can only fight so long to make him see what he is giving up.

Oh, the angst in this one is so intense. Back and forth and back again. The fight or flight is a real issue and it is almost overwhelming. These two are so strongwilled and have such strong feelings. But they are hurt so deeply and keep making mistakes. Their communication runs hot and cold sometimes saying a lot but not always admitting the most important things. Declan's protective instincts are so great that they cause him to sacrifice their chance at happiness again and again. She is a fighter but everyone has a breaking point.

But eventually, he will have to either let her go forever or finally begin to fight for everything. But will it be too late?

This is an angsty, fiery, emotional second-chance love story years in the making.  It plays with your emotions and frustrates you. I was glad to get dual points of view to see their internal struggles. I loved getting more with his brothers and friends in Sugar Loaf. Their relationships and backstories are so intertwined. The brothers' vow to each other and tragedies of their youth have affected all of them differently and caused them to push people away. It takes strong women with a lot of patience to reign these men in. They have been through hell but still seem to have to battle their way towards happiness often fighting themselves. But when these men love, they love hard.  I am looking forward to Sean and Jacob's books. Sean's story has been teased already and I am already interested in them as a couple. I also enjoyed some cameos from other Corinne Michaels books in this one.
"Do you want to dance?"
She nods.
I hear my brother make a noise and pretend I didn't. She said yes, and I'm going to cling to that.
Here might be the last time I ever get to hold her in my arms, and I'm going to take it.
"I love this song."
I love you.
"Why is that?" I ask.
Her arms move to my chest, and I wonder if she can feel the pounding of my heart. My nerves are bowstrings, being pulled taut before the arrow is ready to fly. Everything inside of me is strained, but I keep it together.
Sydney and I move, the world falling away as it always does when I am with her. Gone is the hurt of my past, the uncertainty of my present, and the regret of the future ahead. Right now, I have her.
She's here, in my arms, where she's meant to be.
I don't care if the sky lights on fire because she's all I see.
"Listen to her." Sydney's voice is quiet and pensive. "Listen to her talk about him giving up and her asking him to stay."
And I do. I hear the words, and I swear that she's singing to us.
"Don't tell me it's too late," Emily croons.
"I won't give up that easy.
Don't call me darlin' and tell me that you're leavin'.
Don't walk away.
Stop pushing me when you know you want to hold on.
It could be so easy for us, baby.
I've been here, but you don't see me.
Don't let go if you're not ready for me to walk away." The acoustic guitar takes over as her voice drifts off.
"Syd," I say her name as both a plea to let go and hold on.
Her hands grip my shirt tighter. "Don't. Don't let go. Don't push me away."
I see the tears in her eyes. I don't want to push her away. I want to hold her close, kiss her senseless, and love her until she knows it in every fiber of her being that she's everything I want.
I see her. I feel her. I know her in my bones, but I won't be able to be who she needs.
No matter how much I wish it weren't the case, I can't give her the life she wants with a husband and babies. All I can offer her is a friendship that has an expiration date because once my six-months is up and she has moved, I know I won't allow myself to see her again.
The song ends, and the two of us stop moving, just watching the other.
The spell that was surrounding us seems to break and awareness fills her gaze. Her fingers loosen and drop from where they had been clutching my shirt and she takes a step back.
The loss of her is felt everywhere. My heart doesn't seem to beat as strongly, the cold hits my chest, making it hard to breathe, and the emptiness from her loss leaves me weak.
For those minutes I held her, the world made sense. And now ... I need to leave.

From New York Times Bestselling author Corinne Michaels comes a new emotional and riveting love story in the first standalone novel in the Arrowood Brothers series.

One night, eight years ago, she gave me peace.
No names.
No promises.
Just two broken people, desperate to quiet their pain and grief.

In the morning, she was gone and had taken my solace with her. I left for the military that day, vowing never to return to Pennsylvania.

When my father dies, I’m forced to go home to bury him. At least I'll finally be rid of his farm, which is grown over and tangled with memories I've fought to forget.

And that’s when I find her. She’s even more beautiful than I remember and has the most adorable kid I’ve ever seen.

Years have passed, but my feelings are the same, and this time I refuse to let her go. They say you can't bury the past, and they're right. Because when long-ago secrets are exposed, rocking us both to the core, I have no choice but to watch her walk away again. . .
