Bullets and Kisses Can Burn

The last person Anna Albertini expects to see in an orange jumpsuit in District Court—a place she SO doesn't belong as a new prosecuting attorney—is Aiden Devlin, the man who'd saved her life when they were kids. For years, she has dreamed about him. Now here he is—his eyes blue, his chest wide, and his hands in cuffs.

Sure, Aiden says he doesn't want her help, and his ties to a deadly motorcycle club should give her warning. Yes, her new boss is a sexy Italian bad boy who might be using the case to climb to the top. Plus, the detective assigned to the case, with his green eyes and broad shoulders, wants her to stay out of his way.

With so much testosterone surrounding her all of a sudden, most women would find it hard to concentrate. This might be why the case leads Anna to yelp during a spa appointment, fall out of a tree, and chase a naked old man around the courtroom. It's a good thing Anna learned a long time ago to be her own hero, no matter how fast the bullets fly or the kisses consume.

Anna Albertini is a brand new lawyer in a small Prosecuting Attorney's Office and her whole life seems to be taking an unexpected turn. Her boss is arrested, her childhood savior is back and seems to be a criminal, and her new boss wants her to help him take them both down. And the detective on the case does not want her messing anything up. She is surrounded by bossy and charismatic men with their own agendas.

Aiden Devlin was a troubled youth, but he saved her. She crushed on him hard, but then he left. Now he turns up years later in handcuffs and she is in charge of his fate. But she has been left with little guidance or information to assist her.

Her family is huge, intrusive, and a bit crazy. Everyone knows everything that happens as soon as it does, whether it be an unexpected meeting or being shot at. But Anna is plucky and smart and is determined to do what she thinks is right. But her motives might not jive with others and it seems someone might also want to see her hurt...or dead. Trouble seems to find her. Or is she just at the wrong places at the wrong times?

Who are the bad guys? Are the good guys really good? Is Aiden guilty? There are a lot of questions and not a lot of straight answers. And Anna finds herself in the thick of it all. And also dealing with her new harem of male admirers. S
he is surrounded by intriguing, charismatic men that cannot seem to resist her quirky charms. I definitely have my own favorite, but all have their good points.

This is an action-packed, mysterious, humorous, romantic suspense story centered around a small-town lawyer with a big nosy family. It is told in Anna's point of view and it is definitely the story of her crazy life and the people surrounding her. She is intelligent and inquisitive, but also seems to find herself in dangerous situations and sporting all kinds of injuries. But she just gets back up and gets back at it. It feels like this could easily be a weekly television drama!

This installment gives us closure on the case she is working on, but she still has a lot more to deal with in her personal and professional life. Bailed Out will be the next book in the series and I am already intrigued by the blurb.  I am already invested in these characters.
Anna Albertini has been thrown into the deep end of District Court. As the newest prosecuting attorney, she doesn’t have the experience to handle big cases, but she’s the only attorney available due to a series of events that have shaken up her office. But she also didn’t imagine she’d find the boy who saved her once standing across the aisle, now a man facing felony charges. Between Aiden’s return to town as a member of a dangerous motorcycle gang, her sexy new boss’s agenda, and the lead detective on the case, she has more than her share of male attention.

And this case is more than she bargained for as well. The situations she finds herself in during the course of her investigation were by turns hilarious and down right dangerous. As the bodies continue to pile up, she questions everything she thinks about everyone involved in the case: including the sexy men around her.

I loved getting to know Anna and the people around her. The small town aspect means everyone knows everything the minute it happens, even when they live in the next town over. It also has a long memory and those around her protect her from the nightmare she was rescued from as a child.

This has a romantic thread in the storyline, but is not a complete romance. The focus is strongly on the suspense and legal aspects of her life and situations. I rather enjoyed the way each of the men in the story are introduced. They each have their good qualities and their character flaws, but they also start a sort of courting process with her. She is attracted to each of them for different reasons, and I can’t wait to see how the strongest of the draws plays out as the series continues.

At times Anna reminded me of Stephanie Plum, with her way of attracting multiple men interested in pursuing her and finding herself in dangerous places. I was completely entertained as I watched her try to do her job but instead find herself in precarious situations more often than should happen for a junior lawyer. She’s got a great head on her shoulders though and a backbone to stand up and do what she thinks is best. I can’t wait to see where this series takes her, and how the overarching series threads continue to weave together.
“I see,” the judge said, turning to the small stack of case files in front of her, clearly disappointed at the lack of gossip. “Let’s get to business, then. Georgiana Lambertini,” she called out in a clear voice.
I turned as Georgiana and Thelma shuffled up to my table. Georgiana had donned a pirate’s black eye patch.
I shifted my attention to the judge. “This is Georgiana and also Thelma Mullen. They were charged together.”
The judge raised her eyebrows. “For breaking and entering?”
Georgiana’s hands clasped against her chest. “It was a mistake, judge,” she said solemnly, her visible brown eye earnest and cloudy. “We were just trying to be good neighbors. We’re getting close to heaven’s gates, you know.”
“But,” Thelma started, then, “Ouch!” She grimaced down at her foot.
Georgiana smiled angelically next to her. “Yeah, we were just watering our dear neighbor’s plants,” she continued, her face beseeching and sad.
Thelma hummed and fluttered mascara-caked eyelashes. “Well, all right then,” she said.
The judge nodded at Georgiana’s eye patch. “Were you injured?”
“Oh no.” Georgiana flipped the eye patch up, revealing a cataract riddled brown eye. “I thought it was a good look for the big house. You know, so the bad bitches don’t mess with us.”
The judge buried her head in the file, and I couldn’t move. The lady had just sworn in court. It was funny, but…I couldn’t move.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Rebecca Zanetti has worked as an art curator, Senate aide, lawyer, college professor, and a hearing examiner - only to culminate it all in stories about Alpha males and the women who claim them. She writes dark paranormals, romantic suspense, and sexy contemporary romances.

Growing up amid the glorious backdrops and winter wonderlands of the Pacific Northwest has given Rebecca fantastic scenery and adventures to weave into her stories. She resides in the wild north with her husband, children, and extended family who inspire her every day--or at the very least give her plenty of characters to write about.
