He needs an image makeover, she needs a mojo upgrade. A new lessons-in-seduction hockey romance from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Sarina Bowen.
After I’m arrested for throwing a raucous party, my hockey team says I have an image problem. And I need to fix it, stat.
Charity work? Check. Haircut? Sure. But I draw the line at hiring my neighbor to style me. In the first place “style” shouldn’t be a verb. And I’m tired of people who’d judge me on appearances.
Vera and I don’t see eye to eye on anything. She wants me to try on clothes, while I just want to remove hers. She's distractingly pretty, with soulful eyes and a sinful mouth that likes to argue with me.
But when management threatens my summer vacation, I grudgingly agree to Vera’s unusual proposal: she’ll give me an image makeover. But in return, she wants lessons in the art of seduction.
It sounds a little nutty, but I know a good opening when I hear it. Besides, it’s not like I’ll ever fall for her…
Vera is a personal stylist working hard to get her business off the ground. She’s a little prim and proper and focused on presentation. And she personally still has some self-confidence issues from her last relationship, so she’s kind of afraid to jump back into the dating pool.
Ian Crikey is rough around the edges. He’s a hockey player that is struggling with some on and off-the-ice issues. Style is the last thing on his mind. He doesn’t care if his hair is long, his clothes are worn, or people don’t like his tattoos. But when his issues and his image start to impact his career then he has to at least take notice.
Vera is his neighbor, even though she’s not happy about it, and they’re going to be stuck together on a vacation with their friends so it seems logical to take the help from her. She has already made it clear that he is not her type, but now she is admitting that she could use a little help of her own...in the form of seduction lessons to build up her confidence. Fashion tutoring for sex tutoring...what a compromise.
This is a feisty, snarky, sexy, sweet, opposites-attract, forced-proximity, lessons in seduction, vacation fling story with two people who seem to have nothing in common. They bicker, tease, and taunt. Their interactions run the gamut from antagonistic, sarcastic, flirty, dirty, fun, and sexy. The chemistry is natural, and as they spend more time together they start to see more of what makes the other tick.
I really liked Ian. He is just unapologetically himself, but also has a good heart and he is struggling with some things. And Vera is more self-conscious, but she is thoughtful and caring and is trying to learn to let go and live a little. They are compatible in some ways and do challenge and push the other, and they both struggle with trust and communication. It is bound to get a bit messy since they are acting on impulse on vacation and do not really know what they are doing or what they want back in the real world.

I enjoyed this installment in the Brooklyn hockey series. This brings back all of the couples from the recent books and some other cameos. I enjoyed getting to spend more time with them.
Vera is a personal stylist working to grow her business. She is smart, a little bit sassy, and also a little insecure after a bad end to her last (and only serious) relationship. A trip to Italy with her friends is something she’s been looking forward to.
Ian Crikey has an image problem and management is breathing down his neck to turn things around. It was just a little party that got a little loud, and somehow the cops were called. Now he has to fix his public image, and is willing to do just about anything as long as he can still go on his Italian vacation with friends.
Being the only 2 single people on the trip they were bound to be thrown together often. I loved their banter that started as they argued over everything, and loved the way it sparked into an easy friendship and then began crossing lines as Ian gave Vera lessons in seduction.
I had the opportunity to listen to the audio version of this book, and Joe Arden and Rose Dioro do a fantastic job voicing these two characters. I’ve been leaning more on audio lately as I can multitask, but I found myself not getting a whole lot of my other tasks finished as I focused on the audio instead.
This was such a fun getaway, enemies to lovers romance. The love lessons and image makeover made for fun interactions, but it was really the trip that got me hooked on these two. Spending time with Ian’s teammates and seeing them in such a relaxed setting was completely entertaining.
