The first time I met Merrick Crawford was during my job interview.

Well, technically, I’d met him twenty minutes earlier when he’d barged into a fitting room a few doors down from my appointment.

I yelled.  He yelled.  After an argument while standing in my bra, I proceeded to smash the door into the gorgeous jerk, trying to yank it shut.

As you might imagine, I was freaked out when I discovered that the rude guy was my potential new boss.

Yet he didn’t seem to recognize me. Or so I thought…  Until we wound up bickering again during my interview and he told me to go sniff my armpit.

Okay, so maybe I hadn’t exactly been changing when he walked in on me.  In my defense, I’d been stuck on a hot train for two hours and wanted to make sure I didn’t smell.

I obviously didn’t expect to get the job. But somehow an invitation to a second interview arrived in my inbox.

Before I left, I asked to see Merrick.  I needed to know why I was even in consideration after our disastrous start.

Turned out, Merrick only wanted to hire me because I was the least competent candidate.  It seemed his board was making him fill the position, against his wishes.

I didn’t really want to work in a place where my boss expected me to fail.  But I figured maybe I’d enjoy proving him wrong. It was a little thing I dubbed the boss project.

What I wasn’t prepared for was that there would be other things I’d enjoy doing to Merrick Crawford.

Getting involved with the boss wasn’t the smartest choice.

But you know what they say about choices: Some we regret, some we are proud of.  I just had no idea where this one was going to land.

Evie and Merrick‘s meet-cute is actually more of a meet-disaster. He’s a grumpy, controlling, intimidating CEO of an investment firm. Here life has imploded and she is down on her luck, but still trying to be positive at a job interview. But the situation itself puts them at odds.

They start out as adversaries and gradually begin to banter and develop a rapport. They both have been hurt in the past. Both have trust issues and fear of rejection. There’s a whole forbidden aspect because of the workplace and the situation. But they definitely have spark, chemistry, and begin to appreciate each other.

She is outspoken, sarcastic, smart, bold, resilient, and compassionate. She seems to bring out a softer side of him that is funny, flirty, and caring. I loved seeing Merrick have opportunities to open up and be more vulnerable even though that comes with its own new set of problems.

It’s a witty, sexy, snarky, workplace romance, but there are also some past issues and deep-seated emotions that need to be addressed which add more angst and drama. I really liked these two together and I liked seeing their dynamics change. But there were also times I wanted to smack some sense into them or force communication.

Evie‘s past and problems are explained from the beginning, so we know her struggles and self-doubt. But there’s a mystery surrounding Merricks's past that we learn from his point of view in flashbacks gradually throughout the story which also adds to the mystery and drama. It just made my heart hurt so much for him.

There were a couple of things that kind of made me shake my head and I really wanted more clarification on, and I felt were kinda just left a bit open by the end. But I was still invested in their story and enjoyed it.

I loved his grandmother, Kitty, and his friend, Will, and her sister, Greer. They provided humor, entertainment,  and also a swift kick when needed.
Evie is picking up the pieces after her last relationship imploded, leaving her jobless and living with her sister. Her life might be a mess but she is determined to get back on her feet and put the mistakes behind her. She is a fighter, having learned young that life wasn’t always easy.

Merrick runs his hedge fund business with a firm hand, expecting a lot from his employees but not more than he himself gives. That high stress environment has his team encouraging him to have a therapist on site to help employees deal with the stress of high stakes decisions. He has some baggage from his past that he avoids as much as he can, filling every waking moment with work, work, and more work.

These two had great banter from the beginning. Though they started out on the wrong foot, Evie was determined to prove she belonged in the position she was hired for, while Merrick was still convinced he didn’t need a therapist on the staff. That difference of opinion fueled many of the early encounters between them, but also gave them plenty of opportunity to spend time together as the sparks began to fly between them.

I was entertained from the very beginning and found myself drawn to the story. The side characters brought hilarity to several scenes -- Kitty is an absolute gem. But there were a few aspects towards the end that left me scratching my head a little bit and wishing for additional answers. Fortunately they happened at the end after I was fully invested and engage with these characters.

This was a fun, relatively speedy enemies to lovers with great banter and some emotional drama. As usual, Vi Keeland has written an engaging, diverting story full of well developed characters and great plot.
