From USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Emma Scott, comes an emotional paranormal romance about sacrifice, redemption, and the power of true love.

Cole Matheson didn't expect the road toward being a successful painter would be paved in gold, but he hoped there'd be a few less potholes. Insidious self-doubt that whispers that he's no good, talentless, hopeless has him on the brink of despair. Maybe it would be better to just give up.

A midnight visit by a beautiful creature of darkness changes everything...

Ambrosius Edward Meade-Finch surrendered to the underworld centuries ago after knowing only pain and suffering during his short life. Now, Ambri makes humans dance on his strings, feeding on their desire for his own pleasure. But his liege lord questions his loyalty and commands him to bring a pure soul into their dark realm.

Cole Matheson seemed like an easy mark, but Ambri didn't count on his goodness or the depth of his generous spirit that wants Ambri just as he is. And Cole never expected to find in Ambri a muse who unlocks his talent and who might also be what his lonely heart has been searching for. Something fragile yet powerful grows between them, and the possibility of soul-deep love hangs in the balance, if only they have the courage to reach for it.

But fairy tale endings don't come without a price. The dark forces Ambri answers to have been promised a soul, and they're coming to collect...

The Muse is book 2 in the Angels and Demons series but can be read as a standalone.

Ambri helped his former superior find love and escape the dark realm and reunite with his soul mate. But now he is in the crosshairs of the Archduke of Hell. His new assignment takes him on a mission to bring a pure soul to the dark realm. With all of the things Ambri has done in his dark afterlife, this should be easy. He is the demon of lust and gluttony and easily seduces people into despair.

Cole Matheson seemed like an easy target.

Cole is a struggling artist, barely surviving, and already being haunted by doubts and insecurities. He is good, kind, loyal, and just in need of a break, but it seems like everything just keeps getting harder for him. He is depressed, lonely, anxious, and hopeless. And then the weird sightings and dreams begin.

Ambri begins to infiltrate himself into Cole's life making him confused, but also inspired. An unexpected and seductive muse. Another deal ties them together.

Cole is at the precipice of having everything he ever dreamed of. But Ambri is also making him want even more. Ambri has never felt love or accepted in life or death, but Cole actually sees him. But Ambri made a deal with a devil and even if he does not want to honor it, he may not have a choice. Darkness will be coming for them.

But can a glimmer of hope and a true soul-deep connection be enough to ward off the darkness and find a way to out of this situation beyond their control?

Darkness vs. light. Despair vs. hope. Lust vs. love. Damnation vs. salvation.

This book is a bit hard at the beginning. It is full of loneliness, despair, fear, and hopelessness. But as these two men begin to form a connection, the feel of the story changes to more of an emotional and hopeful one. I became invested in them and had to believe there was some hope despite the terrible situation they were in. My heart hurt for them and there was plenty of tension.

This is about the power of fears, lust, and self-doubts, but how they can be tempered by friendship, love, acceptance, hope, and faith. It is also a story of sacrifice, redemption, and fighting for something they never believed was possible. I loved Cole and Ambri together. I also enjoyed more with Lucy and Cas from THE SINNER. The world and characters she has created in this series are so vivid, raw, rich, and layered. The whispers of negativity and the idea that we all have demons snapping at us seems totally plausible. Cole and Ambri's tumultuous story had me captivated and flipping pages by the end to see how it was all going to end up.

It is obvious that the author put her heart and soul into these pages including her own loss and grief, and that makes the glimmer of hope even more poignant.

THE MUSE is a standalone in the Angels and Demons series but you can meet Ambri and Cole in the series' first book, THE SINNER.

Kim's review

Shy, introverted Lucy Dennings lives a quiet little life in New York City, working for a nonprofit and keeping to herself. Every afternoon, she goes home to her empty apartment and Edgar, her houseplant, and every night, she loses herself in the pages of her beloved romance novels. Her lonely heart seeks solace in tales of passionate, enduring, all-consuming love, but more and more, Lucy feels she's not just reading for pleasure but searching for her a lost piece of herself in the pages. As if she once touched something beautiful but it's been ripped away.

Until one day Lucy discovers a dead body in the alley behind her apartment. Even if it's too late, her first instinct is to help.

Her second is to run.

Because the dead body isn't so very dead, and suddenly, her little world isn't so little but one in which dreams feel like memories, "inner demons" actually lurk in dark alleys, and a beautiful creature of darkness with amber eyes and wings like night might hold the key to what her heart has been aching for...if she doesn't fall down the path of eternal damnation first.
