Release Blitz: Coach: Devney Perry
Football star. Single dad. And once, a long time ago, mine.
I’ve spent the better part of a decade forgetting Ford Ellis. If he had just stayed away from Montana, I might have erased the memory of his striking blue eyes and rugged smile forever. Avoiding him was easy when the only place I saw his face was on ESPN—and a remote control could fix that problem.
Maybe I haven’t forgotten Ford. Maybe I still dream about what we might have been. Maybe he hasn’t forgotten me either.
Except those maybes won’t change the fact that we were never meant to be. Maybe he was mine once. But as of today, the only thing I’ll be calling Ford Ellis is Coach.
This is a sweet and swoony single dad, second chance, former best friends, small town, forbidden, workplace and sports romance and I am here for it!
Ford Ellis is moving back to his college town. He has played and coached in the NFL and now he is moving back to Montana to coach at his alma mater with his young daughter in tow. It is time for a fresh start, distance from some problems, and to try to make a better life. He is charming and well-liked but also has a lot of expectations placed on him to win and maintain a good image for the university. And he is also dealing with settling himself and his daughter into a new place.
He never expected to run into her. Millie. The one that got away. His college best friend he hurt when he pushed her away and left. He had his reasons and while he did what was right for some, it hurt her and himself. And they lost touch for over a decade.
Now they are in a position where they work in the same environment with plenty of eyes watching. She is determined to keep it professional and avoid him as best she can, but he is equally as determined to mend the rift. And they have to deal with the issues from the past while facing the fact that they still want each other in the present and all the repercussions that could have. Ford is now a man who knows what he wants and is willing to put in the work to get it. But Millie is guarded, fearful, and has everything to lose.
I really liked these two together. They had such a natural rapport and chemistry and a bond forged in friendship but then lost due to heartbreak and distance. The sneaking around element added so much tension. There are plenty of external factors in the present getting in their way, but the two of them felt like a good match from the start and I was rooting for them to be able to win at love this time. I also enjoyed seeing him try to be the best father he could be while managing a busy and stressful work life and relationship issues.
This was originally supposed to be a stand-alone but now the author is saying it might become a series. I hope so because I would love to see Toren, Rush, or even Autumn's stories. I enjoyed this new college-centered sports world and the characters.

Ford is returning to his college town to lead the football team after scandal wracked the program with the old coach at the center. He has a lot of rebuilding to do, but is confident he can do it. Not only is he up for the challenge, he is up for the change. An injury ended his career and while he has loved stepping into coaching, he needed to get his daughter out of the city.
Millie hasn’t left the college town, but thought she had put her old friend and crush out of her memory. When she learns her boss has hired Ford as the new coach, she hopes she can keep the past where it belongs.
This was a fun, relatively easy going second chance sports romance. There was a lot going on with a no-fraternization policy, Ford’s daughter, rebuilding the team, and the regular everyday demands of running multiple sports programs. But I loved how it also felt like a real world romance, juggling all those demands on the couple. They have a great rapport and even though there are things from their past that have to be confronted, they fall back into their friendship easily.
I love a good single-dad story, and Devney seems to pull this particular trope off perfectly! Ford is absolutely devoted to his daughter, and even though he has a demanding career, he works hard to keep things as stable as he can for her. It makes sense that he would be making the changes he does in order to be the best possible caregiver he can be to his little girl.
I can always count on Devney to build small town worlds that feel like the places I know. I felt like I was walking through my own alma mater as she described the college town and the excitement that builds in the Fall as campus preps for the return of students. I cannot wait to return to this world for another story!
