A swoony, heart-wrenching small-town romance from USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller Sarina Bowen!
Leila:
What I meant to do: quietly divorce my lout of a husband and then have a child all on my own.
What happens instead: my crush comes back to town when I’m at my most vulnerable. After too many cocktails, I ask him to be my baby’s father.
In my defense, it’s been a rough couple of months. Seeing Matteo Rossi again after fourteen years has done a number on my emotions. And my libido.
In the morning, I’m hoping he’s forgotten the whole thing. But no such luck. In fact, Matteo has a few clarifying questions. And a few naughty ideas, too…
Matteo:
What I meant to do: visit Vermont for my brother’s wedding. Make amends to my family, and mourn the loss of a friend.
What happens instead: a hot affair with the one who got away. But it can’t last. My life is two thousand miles away, and Leila deserves everything. She’s as good as gold.
Good as Gold will be released at all retailers on May 29th. On June 1st, Good as Gold will move into Kindle Unlimited and the eBook will be available exclusively on Amazon.
This is a story about old friends, unresolved feelings, a long separation, coming home, and changing your entire life.
Leila‘s Giltmaker had two male best friends in high school, and they both knew that they weren’t good enough for her so they had a pact not to make a move. But over the years dynamics and feelings changed, and one of them was left out in the cold. He was just a little bit too late. So he built a life in Colorado with a business and new friends and just stopped coming home. He has had some recent loss and stress. But now he is heading to Vermont for his brother's wedding, and he’s not sure what’s going to happen when he sees Leila again.
But in his wildest dreams, he never imagined what would happen, and what she might ask him for.
I loved Leila and Matteo. Matteo is this big, long-haired, charismatic, self-deprecating yet confident man. He’s just always not felt true love no matter how successful he is. And Leila is a sweet, smart preschool teacher with a plan. She has her goals in life and at this point she’s going to take charge of them and not waste any more time.
These two have history and great banter but there’s also this sizzling, attraction and chemistry, and a connection that’s always been there but was never allowed to be explored. But their lives have some complications. He’s only home for a limited time and he’s got a whole life back in Colorado. She’s on her own timeline. So this is about figuring out what’s really important in life and pushing boundaries of what a future could bring.
These two are a bit clueless at times and cannot see what everyone else sees.I seriously wanted to shake sense into them several times.
But I loved Matteo and all his Rossi brothers and sister and their teasing dynamics and how they’re also very dedicated and helpful to each other. Leila has her own complex family dynamics that play into the whole situation. But at the core of this is just a boy who always liked a girl and a girl who always liked a boy, but never had a chance. This is their chance if they can just get out of their own heads, communicate, and fight for what they want. But they’re also both prideful, stubborn, independent, and feel obligated to take care of others, sometimes to the detriment of their own selves, which is not the best of combinations.

Leila and Matteo were part of a trio of friends growing up together. Time and a missed opportunity sent them in different directions that also left Matteo avoiding returning home for too many years. Now Leila is in the middle of a divorce and trying to figure out how to have a baby. Matteo is just home for his brother’s wedding and to see family, but it is the first time he has been home in a very long time.
I absolutely loved these two! The history between them and their chemistry in the present had me rooting from them from the beginning. They are so perfect for each other that at times everyone around them could see what was going on but they couldn’t -- I wanted to shake them during those moments! But I loved the way this story progressed and the way that Matteo’s time away from Vermont shades his thought processes in the present.
I had the pleasure of reviewing an early copy of the audio. I loved the way Jason Clarke and Lessa Lamb brought these characters to life. Their duet narration gave the story additional voice throughout.
I always love returning to Sarina’s Vermont world and getting to hear what Matteo has been up to in Colorado was fun, as well as watching the romance play out between these two former friends. It was also fun to see the Rossi family again and get a glimpse of a slightly different side of the family dynamics that have been mentioned in other books.
