Risk The Fall
Riley Hart
Releasing November 8, 2023

Riven

I’ve never been great at letting people in. Life is easier if I bury my feelings. People tend to let you down, which is only proven when my best friend, Rex, accidentally kills a man and lets me take the fall.

When I get out of prison, the last thing I want is to go back to Clayton, Oregon, but it’s where my grandma lives, the only person who’s always had my back. My plan is to stay out of trouble, steer clear of my old crew, save up, and the second we can, leave town for good.

Parrish

I want nothing to do with my family and their illegal activities. With Riven back, I worry things will get worse. He and Rex have always brought out the worst in each other, but then I discover Riven went to prison for something my brother did, and my family isn’t happy to have him home.

Riven wants nothing to do with me, and I don’t blame him. But like a moth to the flame, I’m drawn to him. It starts out as mutual lust, Riven sating the pleasure he craves, while I get to fulfill my first-crush fantasies. But with every moment, I see there’s more to Riv than anyone knows.

Not everyone would see him as a good man, but to me, he’s the boy who used to try to keep my family’s lifestyle from becoming mine.

And now he’s the man who risked his heart to fall in love with me…and the one who’d risk more to protect me.

Risk the Fall is an ex-best friend’s brother romance that contains violence, drug use, crime, and death of a non-main character.

Riven McKenna has been in trouble his whole life and it finally ended him up in prison for something he did not even do. He has always been edgy, angry, aimless, and buried his feelings. But now that he is out he is guarded, untrusting, bitter, hopeless, and is just trying to keep his temper. from getting him into more trouble.

Parrish Hunt is the brother of his ex-best friend who ruined his life. He is the stable and honorable one in a family full of losers and criminals. He is responsible, hardworking,  helpful, and caring. He tries to take care of people who do not have others to rely on. He had a crush on Riven growing up but is now concerned that he is back.

Now Riven is working under Parrish and they are wary of each other. Riven does not want to have anything to do with the family who ruined him. Parrish thinks Riven is a troublemaker who will just antagonize his brother and encourage bad behavior. But Parrish does not know the whole story. And when things come to light, it is even more complicated. There are side characters that I loved, hated, and felt bad for that all added depth to the story.

This is an intense, antagonistic,  ex-best friend's brother, mutual lust turned unexpected connection with plenty of misunderstandings and external challenges. It is not a pretty story. It is raw, gritt, heartbreaking, frustrating, and tension-filled. Riven has been conditioned to believe he is worthless and not worth anyone's time or affection. But Parrish is strong and determined to prove him wrong and be someone he can rely on. I just adored Parrish and my heart broke for Riven. Trust and self-worth are hard-earned. But they are surrounded by darkness and threats in their hometown so it feels like it is them having to protect themselves and those they do care about against a world they want no part of.  They might not only have to risk the fall of wanting more together but actually risk it all.

Riley Hart's love of all things romance shines brightly in everything she writes. Her primary focus is Male/Male romance but under various pen names, her prose has touched practically every part of the spectrum of love and relationships. The common theme that ties them all together is stories told from the heart.

A hopeless romantic herself, Riley is a lover of character-driven plots, many with flawed and relatable characters. She strives to create stories that readers can not only fall in love with, but also see themselves in. Real characters and real love blended together equal the ultimate Riley Hart experience.
When Riley isn't creating her next story, you can find her reading, traveling, or dreaming about reading or traveling, spending time with her two snarky kids, and swoony husband.

Riley Hart is represented by Jane Dystel at Dystel, Goderich & Bourret Literary Management. She's a 2019 Lambda Literary Award Finalist for Of Sunlight and Stardust.
